Palo Alto Junior Museum and Zoo

About

A place where children explore, discover and play through hands-on science exhibits and a variety of animals. Free entry; $5 p/person donation suggested.

Story

The Zoo is home to more than 50 species of animals—about 200 specimens in all—many of which are brought into classrooms as part of the Junior Museum & Zoo's science outreach program with local schools. Some of the animals include bobcats, raccoons, jungle bats, hedgehogs, ferrets, snakes, fresh water fish and invertebrates, birds, turtles and a giant tortoise!

We offer a menagerie of science programs for schools and community groups, as well as classes, summer camps and birthday parties for families.

What could be better than seeing cool animals for free*? This nifty little zoo hosts a huge variety for such a small (but not crowded-feeling) space: peacock, raccoons, bats, weaver birds, fish, a pond that all sorts of beautiful water fowl call home... Thanks to the enclosure design, it's easy to get up close and personal. Inside the museum you can learn about tons of insects by looking at live creatures in tanks, examining pinned and encased specimens, and even dressing up as them and climbing on a web. There are also rotating exhibits about non-animal topics. The one we saw was about electricity and had tons of interactive features (crank this, connect these, cover that...). Though it's target audience is probably under 10, it's an awesome experience for all ages. *You should definitely donate.

Nice little place for kids to spend an hour or two. Few real animals and some really good cement sculptures.. the museum is an interesting place with few machines that excite the little ones. Definitely recommend to visitors with kids who look to pass a couple of hours.

I have been a going to the Junior Museum since grade school, I took my dauter there regularly. Many hands on things for kids to dicover and several animal attractions to see. Some of the setups change from year to year. There are also classes for younger kids available. A cool place to take younger kids for sure.

It is nice little museum and zoo. Nothing blockbuster, but good. Our 5 year old enjoyed it.
