Philipsburg Manor

About

Cross the bridge over the river into Philipsburg Manor and step back in time. It's 1750, and Philipsburg Manor is a farming, milling, and trading center owned by the Philipses, a family of Anglo-Dutch merchants.

Story

Enter the year 1750, when Philipsburg Manor was a thriving farming, milling, and trading center owned by the Philipses, a family of Anglo-Dutch merchants. They rented land to tenant farmers of diverse European backgrounds and relied on a community of 23 enslaved Africans to operate the complex.
Visit here to participate in hands-on activities of the 18th century and learn the riveting yet little-known story of enslavement in the colonial north.

Came here for the headless horseman's hollow haunted tour, and had a blast. Not going to lie, I was a little bit scared and the best part at the end was an exceptional treat for the eyes. A real live headless horseman was a sight I won't forget. Get there on time so you don't have to wait too long in line. Parking was really easy and free.

If I had actually been able to get there, perhaps I'd give it more than one star. However, we never made it thanks to ALL of Tarrytown being closed for a Halloween parade and everyone be routed in circles, unable to get to Sleepy Hollow. I anticipated we'd need to get there early for our 8:30 tickets, but we were in town around 5 and STILL couldn't make it! Locked in a circle of traffic for a good hour and a half before we gave up and headed back to Brooklyn. Maybe the good people who run the shows at Sleepy Hollow could give us a heads up that it would be damn near impossible to get there from the south on account of the parade. So I'm out $50 and did NOTHING for Halloween this year. Next time I'll find a haunt in Jersey.
