Plato’s Closet Maple Shade!

How does the buying process work?

At Plato's Closet Maple Shade, our fashionista certified-buyers look for the hottest trends and styles geared towards teens and young-adults. We buy a wide variety of brands and we buy all seasons every day for both girls and guys. We purchase current casual junior size apparel and accessories that have been in the stores within the past year and a half. If your items meet the style and condition requirements set forth by corporate, the certified-buyer processing your buy will input your items into our computer system. That computer system will establish a price for that item based on its style, condition, and brand and we will give you cash on the spot for the items, which is about 30 to 40% of what we sell them for in the store. Please remember we are a discount store and sell our items for up to 70% off regular retail prices. You are not obligated to accept our offer for any or all items. Selling the best your closet has to offer is easy and free!

Do I need an appointment to sell?

Not at all, the certified-buyers buy on a first come, first serve basis! They buy up until about an hour before we close. We prefer that you bring your items in to sell before that time to allow the buyers plenty of time to evaluate and price your items. Generally, it will take the buyer about 15 to 20 minutes to process each buy depending on the quantity of the buy. And the time it takes from the time you come in until your buy is completed is dependent upon how many buys are ahead of your buy. We try to keep the wait time less than 45 minutes but since no appointment is necessary, there are times when the wait time exceeds this time limit. Obviously, weekends are busier than weekdays.

Do the certified-buyers buy only name-brand apparel and accessories?

No, the buyers evaluate potential inventory by prioritizing first style, then condition, and then brand. If the item is trendy and meets the condition requirements of no stains, holes, or fading, the certified-buyer processing your buy will most likely be able to take that item regardless of brand. Actually, while brand-named items will be priced higher in the computer system, we will absolutely price trendy unknown-name brands a little higher in our computer system as well!

Are there certain types of items the certified-buyers do not usually buy?

Because our store accommodates teens and young adults, we don't buy kid's clothing; however, right around the corner is Once Upon A Child which buys and sells kid's stuff! Again, because our customer base is geared towards teens and twenty somethings, we don’t usually buy business attire such as suits and dress pants. We also do not take formal dresses or prom dresses.

Are there certain types of items the certified-buyers are being more careful about purchasing?

Due to current inventory needs, we are being a little more careful when buying girl's short sleeves, t-shirts, and tanks. For these apparel categories, we love them to have embellishments, a trendy pattern (like an animal print, tribal print, paisley, or floral), lace, ruffles, bold colors, an over-sized shape, trendy crop shape, fitting hourglass shape, and/or a trendy, uneven hemline. In general, we want the trendiest, most current girl’s apparel in those three specific categories.

What happens if the buyer does not take any of my items?

Plato’s Closet is a unique and exciting concept for teens and twenty somethings with a fast turnover in their own closet inventory! We differ from regular consignment because we give cash on the spot. If the item does not sell, it is on us. Through experience and continual training, our certified-buyers are knowledgeable on what does and does not sell in the store. Occasionally, the buyers will pass on all the items in a single buy. They will explain why, and if you have questions always feel free to ask! Our goal is to educate our customer so they are knowledgeable about what we buy so it can be a positive experience for you. Please do not hesitate to ask specific questions about what we did not buy from you. No matter how busy we are, we are dedicated to helping you understand the process. Customer service and communication are our number one priorities, and we try to express that to our customers as much as possible!
