Don't go in a hurry - this place is huge! & grab a map as you will get lost 😉 Meandering through the different rooms will lead to discovering new & interesting subject matter. Good luck leaving with just one book! Even my non-bookish husband can spend hours here! The staff is helpful & friendly, & can talk at length about their favorite authors. Prices on used books are affordable (I've paid $2 & up) so you won't feel guilty grabbing just one more 😊

Powell's is the quintessential store for book lovers. It is a paradise of paper. Powell's presents its customers with the perfect mix of old and new books, some never touched, others lightly used, all with the desire to be read. With permission, you may enter the Rare Book Room on the top floor to find books you could only dream of seeing elsewhere. With 4 levels and a building the length of a city block, there is no end to what you can find at Powell's. The staff are always helpful, and in every section you can find Staff Picks, helping you find more books like ones you already know and love. Or, ask for recommendations from the staff for a new book and I guarantee they will find you something you will love. Sit down with a new book in the coffee shop, or wander through aisles of books reaching the ceiling, you can get lost in Powell's, and it's the best kind of lost there is.

I've visited Powell's 5 times in the last 3 days on my visit to Portland, and each time I've visited a new section of this store. 4 of the 5 times I've entered through a different entrance and each time I've found a new reason to love the store. I have only covered about 7% of the store's offerings, too. Easily the largest and most comprehensive bookstore I've ever been to. I was able to pick up 3-4 books I've never even heard of and my wife got a terribly difficult to find book for her doctorate program. The employee we asked for help said, "if Amazon has it, we'll have it in stock". Extremely impressive and so much fun to visit.

I think this is the world's greatest bookstore. I love it's has new and used. It even has a very secluded rare book section. It's laid out pretty good but it's also hard to find a section if you are unsure where it fits for categories. They have a ton of staff to assist but I wish they had some self terminal's. Oh the best thing about this place is it's a privately owned company. There's a couple coffee shops inside too. They sell board games and a bunch of other random stuff. Weather you like books or not, I think you will appreciate this store.

One of the largest bookstores in the world, a book lover's paradise! They sell both new and used books (you can trade in books for store credit), and you can even find rare and antique books here. It's kids friendly, with a large area dedicated for children's books and toys. For indie writers, they have a machine that can print and bind your work on-site. The store is so big they give you a map so you don't get lost. Aside from books, they also sell home decor items, accessories, toys, and Portland themed souvenirs (what brick and mortar bookstores have to do to survive these days). This place is worth a visit, even if you're not an avid reader.
