Route 66 Veterinary Emergency & Critical Care Center

About

Route 66 Veterinary Emergency & Critical Care Center is a family owned Vet ER in Nob Hill. Finally, a Emergency Veterinary Hospital for SE Albuquerque!

Story

Route 66 was once the gateway to the western United States. Developed as part of the early national highway system the roadway first provided hope and inspiration as the pathway west for families looking for new oppurtunities during the times of the Dust Bowl and World War II. It soon became the path for adventure seekers looking west in the 1950s and 1960s. Invoking a sense of promise and adventure Rt. 66 became intertwined with the growth and development of the city of Albuquerque, New Mexico. It is this same promise of opportunity and adventure that has led to the creation of the Route 66 Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Center.
Recognizing the desperate need for high quality emergency veterinary care in southeast Albuquerque and desiring to operate our own hospital, Route 66 Veterinary Emergency Critical Care center has been founded by Dr. Jeremy Welcome and Rowan McGehee-Welcome. Located along historic Route 66 in the rapidly growing Nob Hill neighborhood we will create the premier veterinary trauma center in Albuquerque. With a focus on compassionate care and exceptional client service while practicing the highest quality of medicine we will initially provide after hours and critical patient care for the pets of southeast Albuquerque and beyond. Through our mission to create positive change in people’s lives we will integrate ourselves into the Nob Hill community, continually striving to serve in new and expansive ways.

Perhaps the experience is better once through the door, but the call I had to ask about vet care for my dog was by far one of the most unwelcoming phone calls I’ve ever had. The receptionist was cold, short, and uncaring when I was asking about my dog’s behavior. I wholly understand that you cannot give medical advice over the phone, but I have had much friendlier calls about similar issues in the past at other vet clinics. I get it, it’s 4am. But perhaps showing even a modest grasp of empathy, you’d know it’s also 4am for me and my pet is sick and I need some guidance and a kind voice.

Our dog needed emergency after-hours surgery and we were referred to Route 66 Veterinary Emergency Clinic. Dr. Reid, Rachel and Darcy were compassionate and professional. We greatly appreciated the detailed home care instructions we were given and the cost was very reasonable. We highly recommend this clinic.

I found a cat in a parking lot and took it to the VCA-as that was the nearest facility. They informed me that the didn't take strays anymore, but that Route 66 Emergency Clinic had the contract for strays after hours with the City of Albuquerque. I called and was told that this was not the case, they only had to take sick or injured animals. I could not take this stray cat home as I already have my own pets and tried again to explain to them that I couldn't take the animal. The woman on the phone told me it was the "law" in Albuquerque that Route 66 Clinic doesn't have to take strays. I asked exactly what law and she changed it to their contract with the city is that they don't take animals unless it is a medical emergency-however both 311 and the VCA (who formerly had this contract) stated that they were under contract for this exact situation. I'm not sure how this hospital thinks it is helping the stray animals in Albuquerque by turning them away. I'll be in contact with the Animal Welfare Department and their head Veterinarian, Dr. N. Vigil, to find out what is going on here and if the city should terminate their contract with Route 66 Clinic.

Route 66 is the best emergency clinic in Albuquerque, and I've been to them all over the years. The staff and doctor were professional, caring and knowledgeable. They got my dachshund in immediately--even with other patients in the clinic--and were able to diagnose and make recommendations quickly so that we could get my little guy comfortable and on a medication regimen for his acute back problem. Even better? The bill was very reasonable and about what I would have paid to take Chuck for a regular vet visit with the same tests and meds. Thanks Route 66. I will definitely be bringing my pets to you for emergency treatment from now on.

I've had to take animals in for emergency services in the past, and it has never been a good experience. Until now. I was actually Googling the address of the last ER I used when Rt. 66 popped up. An animal ER that's actually on my side of town, only 10 minutes away? Have I died and gone to heaven? Well, not quite yet. The actual going to heaven part was arriving there and meeting their wonderful staff. Kaci got us checked in right away, and Dr. Marquez attended to our little guy with amazing compassion and concern. There was none of the usual "You WILL pay upfront" admonishing like you get at other clinics (just be aware, that, yes, that is expected, and there are signs to that effect), and when they showed me the estimate of costs for the required diagnostic procedures, I couldn't believe how inexpensive they were! Dr. Marquez was also very upfront about her concerns that this early we may only be treating to symptoms, not the cause, and told us what to keep an eye out for. The icing on this cake? A follow-up call the following evening just to see how things were going! Unbelievable! Southeast Albuquerque has long needed an animal ER, and we got the best when Rt. 66 opened here! I can't say enough good things about these folks!
