Story

Shofuso Japanese House and Garden is a traditional-style Japanese house and nationally-ranked garden in Philadelphia’s West Fairmount Park that reflects the history of Japanese culture in Philadelphia, from the 1876 Centennial Exposition to present day. Shofuso hosts over 30,000 visitors each year from more than 20 different countries.

Shofuso was built in Japan in 1953 using traditional techniques and materials and exhibited in the courtyard at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. It was moved to Philadelphia in 1958, to the site of several previous Japanese structures dating to the 1876 Centennial Exposition. In 2007, internationally renowned artist Hiroshi Senju, inspired by our waterfall, donated 20 murals to Shofuso.

A viewing garden with koi pond and island, a tea garden, and a courtyard garden comprise the 17th century-style Japanese walled and fenced garden of this historic site and museum. The newly-restored, historic 1876 Sakura Pavilion is year-round space for programming, classes, meetings, events, and exhibitions.

Shofuso was again named the third-ranked Japanese garden in North America by the Journal of Japanese Gardening in 2013,was listed on the Philadelphia Register of Historic Places in 2013, and is a contributing structure to the Fairmount Park National Historic District since 1972.

The staff were so kind, helpful, and very informative. The gardens were beautiful, as was the house. Went in the the summer time, and plan on going again once every season because we were told it looks completely different with each season. Took my one year old son and he loved feeding the koi fish. Also very cute and reasonably priced souvenirs. Worth every penny. I was a,so told they do cultural events and I also plan on attending to one with my family. Stunning. Peaceful. Educational. Would recommend this to everyone I know.

Beautiful grounds, so much info about the house and knowledgeable docents. Feeding the koi was SO cool. The website suggests to plan 30 minutes for your visit. We were there 90 and could have stayed longer if we didn't need to get my niece to work!

I expected more from this Japanese garden after reading all the reviews. First, the price. Entrance for adult-$10. If you have a student id with you-$5. Second, the size of the place. If is to small... And I think $10 is a lot for 20 minutes walking. First you enter Japanese house( you have to remove your shoes before entering, socks required), there are room, bathrooms, restrooms. Then you go outside and you see beautiful garden with trees. Garden is nice and for some time you can feel that you are in Japan.

Always fun place to explore and just to relax amongst well maintained garden. I like to seat out on the verandas and let my imagination transport me to Japan without the 18 hours of arduous flight to Asia. I wish noise screens are installed around the perimeter of the property to block distracting noise coming from passing cars. Tip: You must take your shoes off when walking throughout the interior of the house

Beautiful house and friendly staff. Most certainly one of Philadelphia's hidden gems. Fascinating story behind the house if you love history as well. Make sure to buy fish food from the front desk and feed the Koi, as they are super cute.
