THE HISTORY BEHIND THE INN

Established in 1923, Sokolowski's University Inn is one of Cleveland's oldest family-owned and operated restaurants.

Victoria and Michael Sokolowski purchased the property in 1923. Back in the day, Tremont (or Southside, as it was known for many years) was filled with many taverns and saloons. It was a hard-working, blue collar, industry-driven neighborhood, so it was only natural for these laborers to want a cold one at the end of a long day. Victoria and Michael provided just that.

Fast forward to the 1950s, the Sokolowski's son, Bernard, returns home from the Army and begins to run the family tavern. His future wife, Marion, had moved from New York to Cleveland in the early 50s where she continued to work as a Registered Nurse in local hospitals. She was introduced to Bernard, and they wed in 1954.

As the city and neighborhood continued to evolve with growth and industry, Bernard and Marion decided it was time to start serving some of those Polish-style recipes Marion had learned growing up. When the Innerbelt project started in the mid 1950s, Victoria came up with the idea of feeding these ironworkers, and that's when Sokolowski's dove into the food industry. Marion suggested cafeteria-style service, serving good, quality food. Sokolowski's was born. It's somewhat ironic that we are still here as the state and city begin to build two new Innerbelt bridges.

Bernard passed away in 1987 and Marion in 2001. They taught their children and grandchildren about how to treat people and employees, and above all, you patrons. They instilled a moral foundation that is so important today.

Today, Bernard Jr., Michael, and Mary Lou run Sokolowski's. We are proud to be the oldest eatery in Tremont and the second oldest family-owned and operated restaurant in Cleveland today.

This is a must-visit Cleveland eatery! It has been around forever, and you will often see three generations sitting at the same table enjoying their food. Get there early or late on Friday or Saturday night, because the lines you will face during "rush" hour for dinner are INSANE. That's not a huge surprise, because the food is AMAZING. Best perogies in Cleveland, bar none! Everything is made with love and obviously with family recipes. I've yet to be disappointed with anything I've tried here. Don't expect anything fancy - this is a cafeteria-style restaurant, but with much better food than you'd expect from one! Everyone is dressed down and enjoying their food and drinks. The walls are covered with pictures of famous people who have eaten there and figures from Cleveland sports history. The wait staff will help seat your party once you make it through the cafeteria line, and if you like piano music make sure to ask for the back room with the piano. This is especially nice if you like Christmas Carols, because that's pretty exclusively what is played in December.

Been here a couple times. We have never been disappointed. The atmosphere is excellent and service is good. My friend got here for first time and he was not sure what to order. People there were very helpful in explaining their menu. The food was pretty good and have a variety of them to choose..

I absolutely love Sokolowski's. But be warned--it is always EXTREMELY crowded. Prepare to wait in very long lines, potentially for both the food and tables. If you're patient and get through, it's well worth it. Their traditional Eastern European is just awesome. It's the very definition of comfort food. Enjoy!

A 94 year old Awesome restaurant! We got there just before they closed Lunch at 3PM, and asked them if we could eat - they said Sure - the food line is still up for 6 minutes, but after that, you can take all the time you want to dine! Very nice people! We had the Sauteed Pierogi, which I've never had before - it was perfectly delicious! Also great was the Kielbasa and the Cabbage! If I lived in Cleveland, I would be hitting this place several times a week! The pictures on the wall and the history of the place - Fascinating!

Nice feel of old Cleveland. Best view of Cleveland perfect for a back drop. Had corned beef, real mashed potatoes brown gravy. All deserts made fresh. I was hesitant on cafeteria style but it worked out for the best. Get there at 11am if you want lunch because you will be waiting ant noon. Busy as heck with judge portions.
