Starr Regional Medical
Starr Regional Medical Center is a two-campus, comprehensive medical center with locations in Athens and Etowah. The two-campus system allows Starr Regional to offer more services and share resources furthering the mission of making communities healthier. Starr Regional is affiliated with LifePoint Health, a leading healthcare company focused on providing services in non-urban communities.
The two campuses, which are located only 10 miles apart, began operating as part of a common system in June of 2012 and formed Starr Regional in December of 2013. Accredited by The Joint Commission, the two campuses of Starr Regional Medical Center serve McMinn, Monroe, Meigs and Polk counties providing a comprehensive array of inpatient, outpatient and emergency services, including imaging, surgery, obstetrics, sleep services, physical therapy and rehab services.
Starr Regional Health and Rehabilitation, formerly McMinn Memorial Nursing Home & Rehab Center, is an 88-bed, dually licensed nursing home for both skilled and intermediate patient care adjoining the Etowah campus. Starr Regional Health & Rehabilitation has easy access to the 24-hour, physician-staffed emergency room as well as the other hospital services. With a full-time social worker, activities director and other specialists, SRH&R also offers speech therapy, physical therapy and occupational therapy, as well as counseling. In late 2016, a $2 million renovation was completed.
Starr Regional offers some of the most advanced imaging options in the region, including X-ray, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), ultrasound, digital mammography, bone densitometry, positron emission tomography–computed tomography (PET/CT). In late 2016, the CT in Etowah was upgraded, and in early 2015, Athens and Etowah received upgraded ultrasound machines. McMinn Medical Imaging, the radiology group that reads Starr Regional’s scans, has more 30 years’ experience and is in network with all major insurance providers.
The Senior Care Unit in Etowah is the region’s only inpatient geriatric psychiatry unit for seniors with behavioral and mental challenges. In 2015, the Senior Care expanded to a 14-bed unit, offering the patients a warm, inviting space with more room for activities, therapy and group sessions.
The Advanced Wound Care and Hyperbarics treats patients with acute or chronic wounds that are difficult to heal such as ulcers, burns and non-healing surgical wounds. The center relocated to the former ICU on the Etowah Campus and features a rotating schedule of physicians specializing in primary care and podiatry.
Starr Regional Oncology relocated to a larger, renovated space in late 2015 on the Athens campus and in the Summer of 2016, welcomed Stephen Miller, MD as the Oncologist. Prior to joining Starr Regional, Dr. Miller was managing director of the University of Tennessee Cancer Institute. Dr. Miller assists patients through all stages of cancer treatment and follow-up. The center has been providing compassionate, convenient, high quality care to patients for over 25 years.
The Sleep Diagnostic Center was re-accredited in 2015 and continues to be the only center accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine in the region. Dr. David Guan and Dr. Wallace Burroughs, along with the specially trained sleep technologists, treat many sleep disorders that can interfere with work, home and school life.
Both campuses have outpatient physical, occupational and speech therapy services. Rehab in Athens is located at the corner of Old Riceville Road and Maple Street and also has aquatic therapy.
