I've had several turntables repaired here. Turnaround isn't fast, but service is thorough. Cash only.

I have been going to stereo workshop on and off for years. They are very honest and tell you when/if the item can be fixed and if it will be expensive or not. Being a "vintage" person who still loves her vinyl, I have a vintage 1959 RCA console stereo that I love. It needed work. Stereo workshop does not work on the old consoles but refers the work to Paul Brunina. Paul came to my home this Labor day week end and worked for 3 hours on my old stereo. The poor speakers had seen better days-the next day (still holiday weekend) he returned with two new speakers that fit into my unit. He cleaned/rewired/and adjusted the unit and it sounds beautiful. It wasn't cheap-but for the work he did, the hours he spent on my beloved stereo it was worth every dime to me. It sounds beautiful. If you want to keep your "vintage toys", these are the guys to go to. Keep in mind, there are not too many guys out there that still work on these old stereos/radios and the parts are getting harder and harder to find, not to mention the expertise and hours needed to repair them-it isn't cheap. If you don't want to spend the money-buy the "throw away toys" of today's market-wanna bet they won't be around in 57 years, the age of my stereo

Keep in mind here that almost all people that have bad experiences take the time to post "reviews", and almost none of the people who had great experiences do. Its a sad reality! For every 1 negative review, there have been one hundred positives that went unmentioned. Anyways, The Stereo workshop has always been great to me. They pay fair prices for trade-ins and their repair work is done amazingly well. It's a great spot to stop in and see what's new for sale. I love knowing that if I find something at a thrift I can always take it here for whatever repairs it may need. They charge for a diagnosis, but if you have them repair it they waive it. This makes sense, as time is money! They don't market it well, but the speaker repair expert who works there could honestly be called "world famous". He is known on internet forums as being THE go-to person for anything related to vintage speakers. He specializes in "east coast" sounding speakers. AR.. Bose.. EPI.. Advent.. Boston.. etc etc.

Incompetent liars. I've had three experiences with the Stereo Workshop in Clifton Park, NY. If you're looking to have a piece of vintage equipment repaired, avoid this shop. My experience is as follows... Thorens Turntable repair: Right channel would intermittently drop out. First "repair" was unsuccessful, after being told it was "tested and ready to go". A return trip yielded an inability to repair, and a "don't bring it back" attitude from the ever-cheerful ogre running the shop. This next one makes my blood boil and serves at the catalyst for this review. Marantz 2230 receiver: I dropped the unit off last November along with 3 Elna capacitors to replace the 3 blown caps I found on various boards inside. I even marked the obviously blown caps (replete with goo leaking out of them) with a Sharpie so they wouldn't be missed by the tech. 4 months later (February), I get a call saying it's all done and to come pick it up. Imagine my surprise when I opened the unit and found the old, blown, caps still in place. I basically paid this outfit $85 to let my receiver sit on a shelf for 4 months, and they kept the replacement parts I supplied. If I could give this outfit negative stars I would. What I can do is educate others who might make the same mistake of giving this shop their business. Avoid Stereo Workshop at all costs. There are many other service shops that can rebuild speakers, or service vintage equipment. Take your business elsewhere.

Highly recommend the Stereo Workshop. The owner is a stereo expert and very personable. He replaced woofers in my 70s-era speakers for a really fair price.
