Story

Three out of four drycleaners across the U.S. use a chemical called perchloroethylene (PERC) for cleaning your clothes. Perchloroethylene is widely popular because it is cheap and evaporates easily into the air - hence the "dry" in drycleaning. But if you think that cheaper is better, think again. Wearing clothing that has been washed in PERC can put your health at risk; long term exposure can cause serious harm and increase your risk to cancer. Although California has banned its use, it is still widely used by drycleaners throughout the greater Washington, D.C. area mostly because of lax regulation and low cost savings, which they are able to pass along to their customers.
