Story

Awesome! Interesting documentary is available regarding the construction of the arch in the visitors center. The pods are tiny as they take you up to the top. Once there you can feel the awesome power of nature as you can feel the slight shifting of the arch from the wind. While looking through the glass windows the scenery is breathtaking and undeniably monumental. Visitors to St Louis will treasure this amazing experience come and see it.

The engineering feat was impressive and the design simple yet distinctive. The viewing area on top shows its age. It was small and cramped. The movie was good. The visitor center is undergoing renovation to reopen in 2018 so I expect a much better experience then. The tram ride up was cramped and could be a problem if you have claustrophobia. You really only see the stairs and some of the inside structure as you go up. The view from the top has good St. Louis city and especially the baseball field but not very interesting facing east. It's one of those "bucket list" items.

The gateway arch was really fun to visit. You can pay $13 for an adult to go to the top. As a part of that they have a 20-30 min documentary on the building of the arch. It was very informative and neat to learn about. You ride up to the top of the arch in this tiny car with 5 seats. Luckily it wasn't busy when we went so the two of us got the car to ourselves! If you are claustrophobic try to go on a non weekend! Once you get to the top there are viewing windows for you to see St. Louis and the river. We only spent about 15 min up top but it was definitely worth it.

I've been in St. Louis for the last eight years, but this was my first time up in the Arch. We had family in town and therefore an excuse to be a tourist in our own city! But we decided to do this kinda last minute. Apparently, if you decide in advance, you can not only buy your tickets online, but you can also schedule your time and date. We arrived around 3:15p on a Saturday in June and the earliest available time was 4:35p. We killed time exploring the couple rooms in the old building that had some great historical information.....and then we went to Starbucks across the street. We were allowed to enter at 4p, so we headed over and went through security around 4:15p. We probably didn't get on the elevator to ride up until around 5:20p. The time in between was spent standing in one line, then standing in another, then receiving a number, then having our picture taken, then standing in another line, then standing in ANOTHER line and then standing and waiting outside of our assigned elevator. And these elevators are pretty darn small, as you might imagine. For any of you who might be worried about feeling claustrophobic, there is an elevator on display next to where you by your tickets. You can even step inside and see how you feel. Make sure you do that before hand if you have any concerns. The ride is 4 minutes. Our ride was pretty smooth. The only problem I had was that the elevator door is clear, so you can see the insides of the structure falling down behind you, which made me dizzy to watch. My husband, on the other hand, said it made him feel better. Once you get up to the top, it's pretty darn tiny - go figure. But you can get some pretty neat photos! One of my fears was that I'd be able to feel the Arch swaying (as many people told me you could). But unless I was standing and leaning against a wall, I really didn't feel it. The ride back down was 3 minutes and for some reason it was a little bumpy and clanky....I can't say that was very encouraging. Over all, this was a fun excursion because I was with my family and having a great time. I had no idea that getting up to the top would be the huge process that it was. But I'm really glad that we did it together!

This was a must-see for us on our road trip. But we ran into several challenges, which I will share here. 1) Getting to this location is challenging. Our GPS had us all over the back roads which never got to our final destination. There appears to be little road signage to help. Perhaps we were just missing the details; but once you got into the heart of the city - we couldn't see what street(s) to turn on and we circled several times. 2) we found parking on the levee, which was very convenient for us. But the distance to the arch is challenging for disabled bodies. Please note that you will need a lot of time to get from the parking location(s) to the arch if you are with any limited mobility persons 3) The arch access is rather challenging! We were surprised to see portal-like doors that you had to step into and duck under. Much like an older submarine portal! Plus, the pods are tiny and you will bang your head and get to know your neighbors very well. This was a bit of a challenge for two guests at the arch who didn't know about the tight quarters. So their canes were in the way, and we had to help each other get into and out of the pod. This wouldn't be an issue EXCEPT that when you are at the top, you have to do this while other passengers are trying to disembark or gain access to the same pods. It was rough 4) Once at the top, you really experience the arch itself, as the ground sweeps away from you. The views are stunning. You will most likely be laying on your belly to look out the windows. 5) Tip; bring window cleaner and wipes if you want photos. Everyone seems compelled to touch and grease up those tiny portal windows! 6) It seems you could take the stairs down, which I wanted to do - but didn't have the chance. My mother needed my assistance. Thankfully, they allow limited mobility people to board at the last pod, so that they are least affected by the crunch of humans at the other pods Other than these challenges, we really enjoyed our experience and were fascinated by the mechanics of the arch. It is under constructions during our visit and would like to see the final product when they are done.
