Wow - overall, what a great experience. The ambiance is awesome. The food is great in both taste and value. The dishes are VERY reasonably priced. I had a hard time deciding because there are so many great options on the menu. The service was on point. The restaurant also offers a great happy hour at the bar. I would recommend showing up early if possibly. There are no reservations. We showed up right as the place opened. Things fill up quickly. I will defiantly be going back.

Can't say enough about this place. Great food at great prices. Service was a bit spotty but the place is so dang busy you can't blame them. Y'all, the food. It is all just extraordinary. I have cooked and had cuisine from Laos a few times - this took it to another level. The alligator laab, crispy coconut rice, and jerky were all highlights.

Love, love, love this spicy spot in Columbia Heights. Easy to drop in without a reservation. I wanted to try TONS of things on the menu. I'll be back!

For a city of its size, the DC restaurant scene certainly provides a variety and eclecticism that rivals that of its larger neighbors, and Thip Khao is a quintessential example. What a gem! Don't be fooled by its humble appearance and assume this will be a fast casual, soullessly mundane experience. The menu here is anything but . They excel at the atypical - chicken hearts with lime, fermented fish that overwhelms the palate with umami flavor, alligator and sour pork, and their filling and eminently satisfying laab. Everything here is worth trying, and trying again. If it wasn't for the fact that I'm not alone in my enthusiasm for this wonderful space, I'd come here far more often. As it is, the wait is usually upwards of an hour. I remain undeterred, and keep Thip Khao in my regular rotation, when I want a meal that will never disappoint.
