Tonto Natural Bridge State Park

Story

Tonto Natural Bridge is a natural arch in Arizona, USA, that is believed to be the largest natural travertine bridge in the world. The area surrounding the bridge has been made into a state park called Tonto Natural Bridge State Park, which is located off State Route 87, just 10mi north of Payson. Tonto Natural Bridge stands over a 400ft tunnel that measures at its widest point and reaches a height of.HistoryThis natural bridge was first documented by David Gowan, a Scotsman, in 1877 while hiding from hostile Apache tribe members. Gowan was impressed by the location and persuaded his family to emigrate and live there. Gowan also tried to claim the land for himself under squatter's rights.Gowan family members lived near the bridge until 1948. Their lodge building survives to this day and is included in the National Register of Historic Places.Park facilitiesWalking trails Pine Creek Trail - approximately 0.5mi long Waterfall Trail - approximately 600ft round trip to waterfall cave.Gowan Trail - approximately 0.5mi long, ending at an observation deck in the creek bottom.Gift shop Portable restroomsClosureIt was announced in early 2010 that the park was scheduled to close on June 3, 2010 because of budget cuts and to allow for repairs to the historic lodge. One of the best day trips from Phoenix! Be careful, it is incredibly slippery in the falls and in the bridge, but the views are amazing. There were lots of young families here and the kids were having a blast. They are much less fearful than us adults! I am excited to come back on a day when it is less busy. Gorgeous!

Staff was completely uninterested in conversation. They acted like you should know everything about the park already. If you asked a question they just handed you a brochure. Never had that happen before at a state park. Usually the rangers love to tell you all about their park. The park itself was beautiful.

Go a little earlier to cover the trails.. we went at 3pm and they close at 5pm.. not just the entries, exits closed at 5 too.. they start asking people to leave at 4.00-4.30 pm.. amazing place.. hike down to the entrance of the bridge and you can get inside for some light bouldering.. there are caves in the Rock face that are fun to get into.. rocks might get slippery..

Beautiful! Just outside of Payson- a quick drive from the valley. Great place to take out of town guests. Wear comfortable shoes as the well-marked trails are abundant! Fun for kids with a waterfall, bridge, and ability to play under the bridge. Bring towels. Good for older adults that neat sturdy surfaces to walk on. Bring lunch- lots of BBQ pits and picnic tables with a gorgeous view! Gift shop has some neat items and tons of hummingbirds that feed on their patio. Restrooms are kept clean. Plenty of parking- even for groups. Bring cash- it costs to get in, but well worth it. Will definitely go back.
