I drove to South Lake Tahoe recently, to participate in a bicycle ride around Lake Tahoe, a fundraiser for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. I booked a room at Travelers Inn and Suites, near the event’s headquarters and was on the low end price-wise at $130. I needed was a place to sleep before tomorrow’s 72 mile ride. I checked in and walked to my room. It was chilly; I turned up the thermostat on wall heater. It didn’t work. I returned to the front office, where the owner explained that it was turned off, since “we’re in summer season.” I insisted on heat; she reluctantly gave me a small electric heater. It worked, but the fan rattled noisily. In the bathroom, the caulking around the shower door was dirty and looked as if it had been applied with a garden trowel; the tiny sink drained slowly; floor tile grout was cracking and coming loose. The shower’s soap trays slanted downward, efficiently depositing a bar of soap on the shower floor. The shower’s base consisted of an ancient Jacuzzi style tub with numerous nozzles, but no controls. Hey, why spend money on a tub, when you can “repurpose” a used Jacuzzi for free. Turning back the covers, I couldn’t tell whether the wrinkled sheets had been changed or not. The blanket contained multiple dark stains. Turning on the TV to watch a soccer game, vertical lines of white dots continuously marched from left to right across the screen, annoying, but not enough block my enjoyment of the game. Noise. No shortage here. Tahoe traffic runs 24 hours a day, and most motels/hotels have been modified appropriately, but not Travelers Inn. The thin walls and ceiling transmitted auto, truck and motorcycle sounds as if designed for the purpose. Toilet flushes, showers and conversations interrupted my sleep into the early. For $130 I expected no more than clean, no-frills room, not a disgusting dump.

The room is very basic. Bed is clean. Unfortunately the bathroom floor had lots of hair from the previous resident, and also it's 40 degrees outside but the heat isn't working.

You get what you pay for. Not modern, but a clean room and bathroom.
