Story

The U.S. Post Office, also known as the Federal Building, is a post office located at 401 W. 18th St. in Merced, California. The post office was built in 1933 as part of a public works program started by Herbert Hoover. The building was designed by Los Angeles architects Allison & Allison in the Mediterranean Revival style; its design includes a tile roof, stucco walls, and arched windows with terra cotta surrounds. The building's use of Mediterranean elements in an unadorned design reflected the notion of "starved classicism" used in many of Hoover's public works projects; this form of design used themes from classical styles in the plain manner of the Art Deco and Moderne styles.MuralsThe post office also includes two tempera murals, Jedediah Smith Crossing the Merced River by Helen Forbes and Vacheros by Dorothy Puccinelli, which were sponsored by the Section of Painting and Sculpture and painted by the two local artists in 1937.The U.S. Post Office was added to the National Register of Historic Places on February 10, 1983.

I've shipped hundreds of packages from the Merced, California M St post office, to all over the country and various military bases worldwide. The employees are knowledgeable, polite, and friendly. I have received excellent customer service at this post office.

Very small waiting area. There is a clerk working the floor to help alleviate the long line. Very often the wait is out of the building. Most of the staff have a great attitude while others suck. I go there every week cause it's the closest and not because it's better. I like 18 th street PO better. It's too far though.

Customers have a long wait in line inside a small area. Hard to get to mailing supplies, in a place where you have to try to get around people standing in line, that think you're trying to cut in front of them. People in line were complaining about cards always left in their mail boxes without attempt to deliver packages or special delivery mail. Those working at the counter seemed to be doing their best to help, however smiles might have helped relax some of the tension. Seeing how many had delivery pickup cards, I think they would do well to have a dedicated line always available for those customers.
