Whitetail Resort

Story

Whitetail Mountain Resort is a four-season resort located on Two Top Mountain in the Tuscarora Mountains of Pennsylvania. The resort opened for skiing in 1991, and was acquired a few years later by Snow Time, Inc., the company which also manages Liberty Mountain Resort and Ski Roundtop. Whitetail is located between Mercersburg, Pennsylvania and Clear Spring, Maryland and serves the Baltimore-Washington Metropolitan Area. Located 89mi from Washington, D.C. and 92mi from Baltimore, Maryland, Whitetail is the second-closest ski resort to Washington and the third-closest to Baltimore (behind sister resorts Liberty Mountain and Ski Roundtop). The resort operates a snow tubing park alongside the ski hill. During non-ski season, Whitetail offers fly fishing and a par 72 golf course. The mountainWhitetail Resort's trail system was specifically designed to separate skiers of different skiing abilities. Separate first time, easier, intermediate and most difficult areas are lined up in sequence across the mountain, each fed by a different lift system, with trails connecting each area to its neighbors. Whitetail's trails are a series of straight parallels noted for the steady, sustained pitch of their vertical drop. The resort's design was noted by Snow Country Magazine, which gave its 1992 Best Overall Resort Design Award to Whitetail, and by Skiing Magazine, which recognized the resort for environmental excellence in area design.

Waste of money! This is the most expensive ski resort I've ever been to and it has the worst conditions as well. They also have a scam going with their lift tickets. Instead of giving you a separate receipt when you purchase your ticket, the receipt is on the actual ticket. The people at the window DO NOT tell you about this receipt (which is the only way to prove you bought a ticket) and once your ticket rips or falls off, you must purchase another one for full price. I understand some people may try and claim they purchased a ticket but didn't but if that's truly a problem, Whitetail should make sure their employees tell customers to tear off the receipt and keep it in a safe place. John D. Glover, the Guest Service Manager, is rude and will not help you in anyway, so don't bother asking. I asked to speak with the manager of the cashiers department and he just shrugged me off saying "he won't be able to help you". Very unprofessional manager, if you can call him that, and any decently run company would have fired him already. Also, be VERY careful where you leave your equipment, theft is a BIG problem at Whitetail. And remember, if anything bad happens to you there, it is all your fault and the resort WILL NOT help you whatsoever. They are only there to overcharge you for everything from the tickets ($71), to rentals ($50), to locker rentals ($12), to sodas ($4-5) etc. My advice would be to drive to Blue Mountain or Blue Knob, they are both only about an hour away from Whitetail and the conditions are always much better.

This is east coast mid Atlantic skiing, so expectations need to be tempered, but the mountain does a great job. The people are friendly and if you plan ahead and buy lift tickets and rental gear online before you get to the mountain the process is much smoother. Both of my kids went through the kids mountain camp, which was fantastic. The kids had a blast and the quality of the instruction was top notch. We have now skied out west the past two seasons and both of my kids were well prepared. We head up to whitetail about 6 times a year and always have a good time.

I signed my girlfriend and I up for a beginner lesson since this was only her second time skiing and I have to say, the lesson was great and our instructor, Rob, was fantastic. He was extremely knowledgeable and the 90 minute class covered all the basics. We'd taken one other lesson at one of our local mountains and it paled in comparison. I saw a lot of other lessons going on as well, covering a wide variety of techniques and skill levels. One was taking kids through the terrain park, another was showing adults how to make and land small jumps (I'm sure there was a lot more, that's just what I could see/hear from the lift as we rode by). As other have stated, the lines on the weekend can get pretty long. It was too bad in the morning, but by lunch we waited about 15 minutes to get on to the EZ Rider Quad, and after lunch it was over 20 minutes on the same lift. Not really sure what you can do about that, the mountain is only so big... If you can, I'd suggest going during the week. Food is expensive, just like any other resort. Snow conditions were okay on the green runs, it looks like they'd been doing their best to make snow overnight, but it was all pretty granular. There was one particular corner on Sidewinder that was really icy, but everything else was ski-able.

This is one of my favorite resorts in the DMV area. They have long solid runs where you can really get some great progression. Highly recommend it but always make sure to check the snow report before going.

I took my niece snow-tubing here and she loved it! I loved it too because there was a fire right beside the slides to keep me warm. That was a nice touch. It wasn't too crowded, and it was easy to find a parking space. All of the staff were kind and friendly. I will definitely be here again.
