My daughter was released from there today. The prison like setting is very off putting! They are not very informative. Even while there if you ask questions they will tell you to call. Social worker was very nice there although I was the one that called. In fact I had to call to get any information, from med changes, to programs and groups, etc. The doctor who met her and released her in one sitting didn't bother to call me at all. Meeting her for minutes he decided that he would discontinue an important medication that she had been on for months that her normal doctor had prescribed and had given great results. He decided that they would withhold her meds she was brought in with which i had to argue to get back. She was there for 4 days. Her second day there ended up with an eye infection! They do allow you to bring snacks in. Yesterday when I went to visit I brought snacks at which point they told me she had an overflow from the previous snacks I had brought there. Upon her release today they were not returned with her property's. Some of the staff were nice. Some were rude and unprofessional. Mugshots, prison settings, and even saw a child in shackles and chains on.

During my two week stay at WMHI (72hr hold for “severe” depression and suicidal thoughts) I was more distressed than before I arrived. For me, staying there felt like a mix between going to jail and being locked inside of a public school. Sadly, the jail like qualities are much more prominent from the barred windows and locked steel doors to the patrolling staff and the booking process. Also, about half of the staff are professional and seem like they care about the patients while some of the others will make fun of patients behind their backs and treat them like an inconvenience as opposed to a person. These inconsiderate staff create a major “us versus them” type situation, making it harder for the good staff to gain the trust of a patient, preventing them from effectively helping that individual. As far as the doctors go, they seem to prey on a patients fear and abuse it to get them to do what the doctors/courts want even if it’s something like signing papers. There are also a ton of minor inconveniences such as short showers and bad food that could definitely be improved but are fairly insignificant. Overall, from what I’ve experienced and been told by other patients, WMHI is more of a “scared straight” operation than a hospital. I fear that if this continues more and more people with mental illnesses will avoid help or lie about how they feel because they fear the punishment that is being sent to WMHI. I apologize if this has too much useless info or is too opinionated, half of my reason to do this was so I could get it off of my chest.

This Mental institution is clean and safe for employees and patients, like it suppose to be. Some patients do not like that some doors are lock, but is part of security. Some patients are admitted by court order against their will and is understandable their frustration. Treating mental issues is emotionally and physically challenging for families and medical personnel as well, i have seen the medical team deal in a very compassionate and caring and as delicate it can be to manage verbally and physically aggressive patients. I recommend this institution for patients and families who are going through difficult times.

4100 Treffert is the admin building, and mail to "inmates" sent to that address gets returned to sender, no such address. Their mail should go to 1300 South Drive, apparently no one cares enough about those people to share this info.

I was there for 7 days. My friends at home were terrified for me because they saw all the bad reviews but I had to reassure them that I was fine. People at Winnebago will complain about rude staff but the staff is only rude when the continuously get disrespected by patients which I've witnessed. As long as you are respectful to the staff then they will be respectful back and try to help you out with what they can. Considering the circumstances of why the patients are admitted there, it's understandable for a bit of the prison like living situation but if you look at things negatively then they will be negative. They do this for the safety of patients, better safe than sorry. I will admit the food isn't wonderful but at least it isn't horrible and we have food as well. Regarding recovery wise, I didn't get too much help, group time was really just socialization time. But they helped talk things out and answered questions to the best extent when I had them. A lot of times the doctors weren't available immediately but considering how many people are in the building versus how many doctors they actually have, it's understandable as well. I hate to hear all these bad reviews because it really isn't that bad at all.
