Woodman's was founded in 1919. The East Madison store location opened January 3rd, 1979.

Story

Woodman’s Markets are a fresh change from the super box multi-product stores like Wal-Mart and Meijer and the national grocery chains like Dominick’s, Jewel, and Pick n’Save. Currently, shoppers access Woodman’s stores all the way from Green Bay, WI to the Chicagoland suburbs of Illinois. Customers rely exclusively on Woodman’s stores for their grocery needs, and there is good reason why. Woodman’s offers huge variety and much lower prices than these other grocery stores and super box operators. In addition to grocery items, Woodman’s stores also feature huge, extremely well-stocked liquor stores, discount gas stations, oil change centers and car washes. This makes Woodman’s a convenient one-stop, grocery-shopping destination.

While shopping at Woodman's may not be the most glamourous experience, it hard to beat the incredible selection and rock bottom prices.  The store is not as nice as the newer Sun Prairie store and gets insanely busy on weekends, which means long lines to checkout.  The liquor department has possibly the best selection of wine, beer and spirits, but the staff is not as knowledgeable as some of the area specialty stores.
While this Woodman's offers a large variety of produce items, the quality is really hit or miss.  If you are super selective and look at each item closely, you can come away with decent produce, but it takes a lot of effort.
I know, no credit cards means lower prices, but it sucks when you are in the check-out line and realize you left your ATM card at home.

Woodman's East is the best market on the Eastside when it comes to price, variety, and service. While it is not as fancy as some of the other stores who waste their employees time making sure the fruits and vegetables are stacked in neat little pyramids at the entrance, the savings is passed down to the customer. It has everything you can imagine from a huge foreign foods section to fabulous bakery. It also has the convenience of an attached liquor store and nearby gas station. The perfect one stop shopping place to get your monies worth.

This is the store you go to for the low cost basics like toilet paper, soda pop, canned  foods. Woodmans is almost always cheapest. Also the cheapest liquor store in town. Their produce is usually unripe. Their meats are cheap which is the only good thing I can say about it. This is one of my go-to stores but just for the prices.
     Major complaint: the self-serve scandal registers fail at some point every transaction. They employ so few cashiers that there is often a 15 minute wait at the manned registers. Either improve the self service machines or hire more cashiers.

Amazing prices and it is laid out very logically.  2 main problems though.  It's usually a zoo and it can take easily 20 minutes just to check out sometimes.   The second problem is that the produce is 2nd rate.  Certain fruits like avocados never taste right from here.  I find that the prices cannot be beaten but you get what you pay for in produce

Definitely cheapest grocery in town, but produce is usually 2nd rate.  Do your bulk shopping trip at Woodman's, but get your fruits and veggies at one of the more pricey competitors.  Far, far better quality produce available elsewhere.

Also is often a complete madhouse unless you're going at extremely off-peak hours.  Don't shop here on weekends unless it's absolutely necessary. 15-20 minute waits to check out are common.  Never enough cashiers available.
