Asian Art Museum

About

Hello. We're the largest museum in the Western world devoted exclusively to Asian art. With 18,000 objects and 6,000 years of history, we're here to share what we love with you.

Story

Vision
With Asia as our lens and art as our cornerstone, we spark connections across cultures and through time, igniting curiosity, conversation, and creativity.

Asia is not one place. The ideas and ideals that we call Asian are countless and diverse. Some of the works we display pre-date written history. Others were recently created. Many have connections to works from other continents and other millennia. We explore these links, provoking discovery, debate, and inspiration.

At the Asian Art Museum, artistic and educational programs empower visitors to discover the relevance of great artworks in profoundly personal ways. Immersed in our galleries, visitors ponder the universal values found in human expression. Through the bustle of daily programs, students of the world steep in cultures through art, music, dance, and tradition. In the clamor of our classrooms, children build bridges to old and new worlds.

This is the vision of our Asian Art Museum.

Mission
Our mission is to lead a diverse global audience in discovering the unique material, aesthetic, and intellectual achievements of Asian art and culture.

Good lunch. You can go in to eat lunch without being a member, which is nice. It has an honest history of how Korea influenced & brought innovation & technology to japan. I just rejoined at the Premium member level. I got my free gift:A supposedly $45.00 horse. See pic. I bought a $15. Salad. It's good & large.

I always enjoy a good museum and the gift shop was nice though I didn't see anything that really caught my eye. I wish they sold more jewelry inspired by the art. They are getting ready for a Korea exhibit and we ran into a cooking demonstration. The art was on 3 levels and walking through it gives a good overview of the history of many cultures. It is nice to have them point out that the idea of Asia as a continent is really strange. It's a rather arbitrary and artificial divide by historians and geographers when Europe, Africa, Asia and the Middle East are actually connected. And between Asia and Europe especially that divide is a very vague border space rather then a definite line. For the $15 General admission you have a nice retreat from the SF. The cafe looked nice and it was a quiet Sunday when I visited.

Surprisingly, I have never been here until today, for the book release/cooking demo event by the famous restaurant, state bird provision. The event is great, well organized. Good job that the museum constantly hosts interesting cultural events. Will come back another day to check out the art collection. First Sunday of the month is free!

Really lovely way to spend an afternoon. On a Sunday afternoon , there was barely anyone at the museum. It a great way to get an intro into Asian Arts. Reason for not giving 4, not 5 stars: while the museum is giving you a good historic perspective, the art forms represented are repetitive and no contemporary art from any parts of Asia is exhibited. I would loved to see my juxtaposition and development.

Really enjoyable collection that has a nice progression of style and region in the permanent collections. I wish there were more Filipino Art and applaud the museum for taking steps in that direction. Enjoy the Thursday night events here. Membership is very affordable and has great benefits worth the ROI. I wish the cafe were better.
