Time of Solitude, of praying, of giving thanks, admiring the beautiful land of the Oglala, Crazy Horse's People. My favorite hiking place.

This one is truly a gem among SD's state parks. The trails are nicely kept, the landscape is spectacular, and the facilities are well maintained. It is easy to walk up Bear Butte in just a few hours, getting a nice overview of the surroundings and landscape. Definitely worth a look, especially after having been to Custer State Park (and having gotten their one week State Park Admission).

This place is a great hike up the mountain. The trail is a little rough at points but nothing not manageable. THERE ARE SNAKES. The views that you get at the top are stunning as you can see for MILES. Don't forget to look for the buffalo in the field in the first field as you pull into the park.

Quite a mystical place. The mountain in the park, a volcano that almost was, towers above the surrounding, flat landscape. There is plenty of atmosphere candy to absorb just sitting at the trail head at the foot of the mountain. The trail toggles from easy to hard, but I would say leans slightly toward easy. It is deceiving because it does take longer than it looks to reach the summit, but with wide open views the entire length of the trail, it's not really difficult for a hiker to guess his/her location in the journey. I found this to be such a rewarding, relaxing hike. Highly recommended.
