Story

Belmont Mound State Park is a state park of Wisconsin, United States, containing Belmont Mound, a 400ft hill topped by a 64ft observation tower. The park is managed by the Belmont Lions Club rather than the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. Belmont Mound is an outlier of the Niagara Escarpment, one of several in this part of the unglaciated Driftless Area. "Belmont" is an anglicisation of the French name Belle Monte, meaning "beautiful mountain." A portion of the park received further protection in 1981 when Belmont Mound Woods State Natural Area was added to the Wisconsin State Natural Areas Program. The park is for day-use only; there are picnic facilities but no campground. The observation tower was recently closed by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. The First Capitol Historic Site, where the first session of the Wisconsin Territory Legislature met beginning on October 25, 1836, is located just west of the park entrance.

It's a nice little place to hike in the area. There's maybe 1 or 2 trails that aren't terribly exciting, but there are very cool rock formations all around. The tower is closed, but you can still get up it. It doesn't seem super unsafe, just a little sketchy and not fit for complete public use. Proceed with caution if you decide to climb it. It's worth it for the views at the top.

Nice place with a playground, shelter with a lot of picnic tables and a large grill. The bathrooms we're clean. The trails were under maintained. Unfortunately the tower was closed and I didn't see any signs of it reopening. Could be closed just for winter. Definitely seems like a good Palace to gather with people for a short period of time and maybe to a quick short hike.

The tower was closed a few years ago after too many people were jumping off the tower and committing suicide. A sad fact. Also lots of trash was being tossed off the top of the tower. The road to the top was also closed to discourage people from going to the top of the mound. You can still hike the road but that's about it. Many of the trails that used to go to the top and also around the base of the mound have also become overgrown. Despite all this a nice new restroom building was built a couple years ago.

I generally enjoy going to this park for walks and to relax. It is generally very quiet, a good place to have a picnic, and it's even kid friendly with the medium-large jungle gym that they have there.

The 64 foot observation tower is closed. This fact is not shared with you until you climb the 400 foot hill. This time of year, nether the snow nor foliage can hide the litter. It is a dump. This place does not live up to the standard set by the other state parks. Do yourself a favor and drive up the road to either Gov. Dodge or Blue Mounds state park.
