Story

Mae and Irving Wagner (Bub and Pop) were born and raised in South Philadelphia. As young teenagers they fell in love at first sight and married in their early 20’s. Bub and Pop loved delicious home style food, especially the delicacies of the 9th Street Italian Market. Upon returning from WWII with 2 Medals of Valor and a Bronze Star, Bub convinced Pop they should open a place to call their own. They bought a grocery store in West Philadelphia where they served an Italian Hoagie and a Braised Beef Brisket Sandwich. These two sandwiches are the inspiration for our menu. Almost 70 years later their grandson Jonathan has reinvented these old school classics for future generations to enjoy.

This place is absolutely great in every way. From the personal touch of Arlene at the register to Chef Jon's master sandwich creations, no customer had any sane cause to ever be disappointed. Every sandwich I've had from here has ranged from great to phenomenal, without exception. The space is small (though cute), so it's recommended to just do takeout on a nice day when it's crowded and eat your sandwich at a nearby park bench or in Dupont Circle. The vibe is friendly and you'll get a much better sandwich than you could at any if the chains nearby, including the good ones like Taylor or Jetties. Do yourself a favor and stop in when you're hungry; you will be very happy you did.

Because of the friendship I have with the family I had forgotten it was on Diners, Drive-ins and dives. I was just excited to finally get a chance to eat there and I was blown away with the quality of ingredients and the wonderful different tastes of the foods. Simple recipes with added love to create an amazing home cooked meal experience. ❤

Great food a family atmosphere. The staff were very friendly and the food came out quickly. There is limited seating and this place can get busy, so be prepared to wait to sit or grab food and go!

The best sandwhich I have ever ate! The owner is really polite, and friendly. She makes you feel like you're welcome, which is very rare to see these days. I have the brisket, which was wonderful. She has earned a new very loyal customer.

Such a great place for a local breakfast or lunch. Excellent tasting sandwiches! A great hole in the wall spot to eat. Packed at lunchtime but worth the wait. Chef Jon, Arlene and Alan are the BEST! I will train this  year to take on the Li'l Petey challenge...
