Our Story


There has to be a better way!

“There has to be a better way” thought Mike, who needed another car to accommodate his growing family. The thought of shopping privately or going to a dealer, however, was so unpleasant that he’d put off the process for months. He just couldn’t stand the hassle, time-wasting, and ambiguity. Now, preparing for the arrival of his third son, he could delay no longer.

Unfortunately, buying a car wasn’t like buying a television. Since reliable information was often unavailable, Mike could never be sure he got a good deal on his vehicles. And, the haggling often made the process painful. Then, of course, there was the matter of selling his current car. Mike couldn’t stomach the thought of negotiating a trade-in price only to drive by the dealership the next week to see it offered for 25% more. If he sold it himself, he could command the car’s true worth, but he hated the idea of strangers visiting his home at all hours. In addition, he simply didn’t have the time to go it alone.

That’s when Mike saw the problem clearly: there should be a way for private sellers to get what their car is worth, but without the time and hassle required. At the same time, a buyer should be able to buy a car, know they’re getting a good deal through a transparent process, and feel good about the experience.

With the seeds of the idea planted, Mike recruited two partners who were equally passionate about solving this problem: Aaron, an operations and auto retail expert, and Will, a finance and customer service guru. As the three of them worked together, the solution became clear: CarLotz – a physical used car marketplace that provides the transparency and cost benefits of a private used car transaction and the convenience and service benefits of a dealer.

Absolutely the most professional non-pushy car sales folks I've ever ever dealt with!! Guy was more than nice! I literally drove all 4 ford rangers to see what one I liked the best ! Now just waiting to see if the owners (consignment )will come down on the price to fit my budget a litter better, although I don't mind paying a little extra for professionalism and non pushy sales. THANKS ILL BE BACK WITH AN UPDATE WHEN I COME BACK AND BY THAT TRUCK THANKS MIKE

Have bought twice from these guys. Great service and no pressure to buy. This is a consignment lot so they don't perform maintenance on the vehicles so make sure you thoroughly check the car out. Pricing is fair, if not slightly cheaper than most other lots I looked at

Super fresh dealership with a very positive vibe. Everyone is really nice and upbeat. The guy we worked with, Brandon Sharpe, was ridiculously polite, the guy filled our water bottle like four times, that is way too nice. Car was in good shape so we bought it. That's it.

Overall, my experience with this company was amazing. From the time they answered the phone when I initially called until the moment I walked away with my new car! I believe I worked with Kevin and Wayne (it's been 4 months so I hope I'm right!) They were both great !! I had a minor hiccup with the service contract company regarding double payments as I came to find out a second account was accidentally set up. I called their call center in Richmond and for over a month I was angry as no one had refunded me my money until I met Joana. I want to thank Joana for not just ensuring my money was refunded, but following up with me via text with updates so I never had to worry. She also took the time to ensure this the second account was deleted permanently. Kudos to Joana!

WOW! Look at what 21st Century car buying has become. We had looked at a few cars at this location over the past few months and decided on one. I was looking at 3 cars almost identical to it, and had done my research. We were told this car was a "consignment" car, and they would e-mail the seller with our offer, and ask if they had a spare key, and the luggage compartment cover. Moments later, we were told their counter offer. (By the way, this was a CASH transaction.) Suddenly some guy in a NIRVANA t-shirt came out of an office and said that was the firm price no negotiation. I ask about the second key,(I also ask if they could get me a key at cost plus 10%) and the cover, and how about getting the car detailed since it was dirty inside. NO NEGOTIATION. Now the RANT was on, too much for us. So we left. Needless to say, Very Shook Up. The plan was to head to Delaware to look at another similar vehicle, similar price. This is 5 year old vehicle with 46K miles. A couple hours later, we get a call from the salesmen saying they would do OUR "meet in the middle" offer. No clean up of the car, no extra key, and no cover. The next day, after careful thought, we decided to get the car. For the most part we are happy with the car. I did find out it was NOT a consignment car, but an auction car. They could not have checked with the previous owner about the key or the cover, because it was not a consignment car. So, the dash has been modified, new dash part $350, I had a wiring issue to repair, and I get to detail my NEW car myself, and found a rather large dent in the door I have to deal with. They did have the gas tank full when I picked it up and I thanked them for that. This was only part of the experience. I am not sure why CarLotz could not be forthcoming and honest. And who was NIRVANA in a t-shirt running over the salesman. Buyer beware, it was a strange experience......
