Love, love, love this place. Awesome lookout above with telescope/binocular type machines to look through, an awesome area to walk around outside with plants and information regarding the plants. And they have an aquarium with wild fish, starfish, lobsters etc inside as well as information regarding the wild life that live on channel islands. Really informative and a must see for those that live here or are even if you're just passing through. Best if you have kids to take along!

What a great place to enjoy. Practically no civilization around. Nothing but beautiful nature abounds. Wild foxes, birds, and other beautiful life is easy to spot and photograph. I enjoyed the 5 or so mile hike around the island where you can see beautiful ocean shores, amazing green rolling hills (felt like Ireland), and spectacular time lapse feel into a simpler time with little around to disturb the mind. There are remnants of old buildings there left for education and history. I guess the amazingly green grass and wild flowers were brought by colonists who herded sheep here. And it's now taken over the island. You take a boat ferry to the island where you have about 4 or 5 hours to enjoy. You should bring something to eat and 2 litres per person to drink. The ferry ride is nice and smooth and educational. Definitely bring you camera. Here are some pics I took.

Hidden Gem !! A MUST for a day excursion. Bring Food and Water and good hiking shoes. Over night is Great also. The local foxes are super cute but they know full well how to get into your stuff. Not to mention the Ravens. They will UNZIP your pack and take out your stuff in seconds if you leave it unattended. Great Snorkeling and kayaking...

I was surprised to see how few reviews existed for this national park relative to some of the others. I figured I should give a shout out to this awesome park that may not be as well known outside of California. It seemed I met most all Californians on the ferry ride and on the island. For starters, though, this park seems to me to be the top marine-based park in the entire National Park Service system. The waters surrounding the park, and also the channel separating it from the mainland, are apparently great feeding spots for the marine mammals that everyone is excited to see, dolphins, sea lions, and we even saw some mighty blue whales on the ferry. The ride over was anything but boring with sightings of these creatures, especially the dolphins, who seem to delight in jumping out of the water to impress passing humans, and probably catch a wake wave for easier swimming. In any case, awesome marine wildlife. The park lands are also great, though, we were only able to sample Santa Cruz Island. Santa Cruz seems to be pretty representative, though. The high cliffs make for some stunning ocean and island overlooks. One of my favorite pictures from the entire road trip this year is one from Cavern Point overlooking the ocean and rugged shoreline. Simply delightful in the rustic unspoiled look of it. I wish I had more time to do more than just the day trip option, because camping on the island looked quite enticing, though backcountry camping on Santa Cruz is a bit limited to basically one area near Prisoner's Harbor. The reasoning is sound, though, since the Channel Islands are similar in some respects to the more famous Galapagos Islands in their natural diversity. Thus, this park cannot allow distributed zone camping along the trails due to nesting concerns, etc. Still, I dream of being able to return someday, and California is lucky to have this park (and so many other world-class gems).

Santa Rosa July 2017 ~ Hiked all day and into the night and rarely encountered anyone! Perfect! Sunset and midnight hikes were pleasant as well with the amazing star gazing, the ocean fog in the setting sun, and the nocturnal wildlife [lots of interesting creek life about frogs, big green slugs, land & water beetles]. Island foxes were still out after dark too! Lobo canyon is amazing. Periodic cell phone service at high points could be obtained, like the top of the Torrey Pines hill. For peace of mind, the marine radio I carried had received signals deep into the island. The road(s) to Skunk Point/East Point proved humorous and confusing to me; 1-2 'Road Closed' signs would be posted in the middle of the road, facing North-South; I think referring to a trail no longer used, but I wasn't sure what to make of that; turned around.
