About

Chincoteague Island KOA offers the best in recreational camping, while being the closest campground to the Wildlife Refuge & beach on Assateague Island. OPENING FRIDAY, MARCH 30th!

Story

The salty charms of the sea will delight guests to this new KOA, an island camp-ground with more than 400 RV Sites, Deluxe Cabins and Tent Sites spread across 200 acres of woodlands with views of the lighthouse on neighboring Assateague Island. Themed weekends and kids' activities get the fun started. Explore the surrounding coastal towns, beaches and bays: It's an easy walk or bike ride to shops, restaurants and museums, and it's a short drive to family attractions such as NASA's Wallops Flight Facility. Enjoy the Main Street shops and restaurants, where fresh sea-food comes with beautiful views of Chincoteague Bay. This KOA is just minutes from the entrance to Assateague Island National Seashore, famous for its long strands of undeveloped sandy beaches and the wild horses that roam here.

Let me start with the positives! Friendly staff Clean and modern bathrooms Kid friendly And now for the negatives: At the time of this review I feel that they are not ready for prime time. When we arrived, there was no table or fire ring at our site. When we flagged down a worker, he told us to just take a table from the camper next to us. The space they gave us.... I could literally touch my camper and my neighbors camper at the same time. Talk about tight and close spaces. And then came time to hook up my camper to the full water and sewer. The sewer cap was located UNDER my camper. I flagged down another worker, and tried to explain that campers generally discharge out the side of the camper and not directly below. He told me this was normal for this space. Ever try to set your waste hose hookup while squatting under your camper?? Spot number 300, by the way..... and if you get that same spot, make sure you bring 60 feet of hose to reach the central water for the pod of campers. We usually bring 25 feet.... and that is always plenty. Had to walk down to the family dollar to buy a 50 foot hose so we could connect to the full service.

Best KOA Ever! This awesome place has everything. Our site was spacious (though the sizes weren't consistent) and was very level. The hookups were somewhat confusing, but we figured it out. The lobby and camp store were both great and the new bathhouses were very clean and spacious. Not to mention that it is the closest campground on the island to Assateague National Seashore.

Great improvements to a wonderful but outdated Maddox Family campgrounds. We are repeat visitors and were skeptical but so pleased with the changes and updates. We have heard they are installing a water park in the front which concerns us slightly. We are concerned that a waree park will make it cheesy and commercialized. This campground sits across from one of the east coast's most beautiful wildlife preserve and it would be a shame to see Maddox family campground turn into a mini cheap amusement park.

Very natural and unspoilt. Lots of charming places to eat out and cool little boutique shops and farmers market. Great waves on the beach at assateague island and is perfect for body boarding. Huge strip of golden sand for sunbathing and castle building. Most places are free including the wallops NASA visitor center which has a small but impressive exhibition. You may get to see a real rocket launch. Lots of trails and wildlife. Just watch out for the mosquitos! They are particularly big and hungry!
