First off, if you're going for your visa, go to 500 Shatto across the street from the Chinese Consulate at 443 Shatto Pl. The visa office is on the 3rd floor; be sure you go to the visa office and not down the hall to the passport office which usually has a long line of people. We had all our documents ready before heading to the office: passport photos attached to the application, cruise itinerary, passports, copies of our driver's license (front & back) and a copy of our passport to submit. We got to there on a Wednesday morning (12/10:30 a.m., took ONE number for both of us, and within 3 or so minutes were called to the window. There was no one waiting ahead of us so we must have been extremely lucky. The young lady at the counter quickly thumbed through each page of our documents, wrote up a pink receipt for both of us and said pick the visas up the following Monday. BE SURE TO BRING THIS PINK RECEIPT WHEN YOU PICK UP YOUR VISA ALONG WITH YOUR ID/DRIVER'S LICENSE.

I'd definitely give 0 star if it can be chosen, the fist time I came here was after Christmas,I understood they may be closed on Monday so I came on Tuesday and checked their hours on google said open,it's closed when I got here. So I came again on Thursday the guy in the front said we have to make an appointment online, ortherwise they won't let us in no matter what,we can't even wait there,y'all close at 2pm,bunch of people got here way earlier than you do,why can't we just wait? now I've come twice and go back twice without anything done yet

For Passport & Visa Office: Go to 500 Shatto Place, 3rd Floor. Always go when they open at 9am! Arrive at least 30 mins early! Complete everything thoroughly in advance, and it will be smooth. If you can't handle service without a smile, then China probably isn't the country for you. Do not call or email - they'll never answer. If you have questions about visas or other info, you're better off contacting a Chinese travel agency. Tip: Bring proper passport photos AND a photocopy of your passport, or you will be ripped off at the tourism center nextdoor to do so. Pay when you pick up at a later date, with Visa/MasterCard only.

I needed to apply for an L- tourist visa. I was a little apprehensive after reading some of the reviews. My experience was exceptional. Courteous service, answered all my questions and VERY efficient. It took about a half hour from the time they opened their doors at 9AM to the time I got to the window and it was a long line. It only took about 5 minutes for her to answer my questions, check the documentation and complete the transaction. I went on a Wednesday and my visa was ready the next Monday. I recommend reading the material online at the Embassy's site related to visas thoroughly before you go. The visa section is across the street at 500 Shatto Pl and is only open 9AM-2PM. For my L visa they ask for an Itinerary. Make sure the itinerary includes your flights, where you are going to be and specifically references that the itinerary is for you. I also needed a copy of my drivers license front and back in addition to the other items requested in the online documentation.

We have a Chinese Foreign Exchange student that needs to get a document noterized. He called the office over 20 times over the course of 2-weeks but no one ever answers the phone? So we drive him 200 miles to Downtown Los Angeles so he can get the document notorized. The website says to just walk in, no appointment needed. While there they kept handing him form after form, but just a couple at a time, and make him wait in line every time. We arrived at 11:00 am, the office closes at 2:00 pm, but if you are there they continue to process forms until 2:30 pm. Our student got frustrated and wanted to leave at 2:15 pm; he feels they workers are being told to not process the forms due to some kind of political agenda.
