We made our 2 appointments about 10 days in advance. We had our visa application already filled out online. Everyone in the office was really nice. We had an 8 AM and a 8:20 AM appointment so we didn't have to wait. It took less than 20 minutes to complete the visa application process for both of us, but we were chatting about our trip to Colombia the entire time, so it would have taken less time if we hadn't chatted so much. We received an email about 45 minutes after we left that our visa was ready, so after eating breakfast we returned, waited about two minutes, and received our visas! Easy! We look forward to going to Colombia! Thank you!

I sent an email to request an appointment and in the email described what information I was seeking.  I received a response within 24 hours.  The response, I believe was generic, advising me to schedule the appointment online but it did give good directions on the process with specific steps.  The site is in Spanish, and in fact, seems to be embedded directly from the main Cancilleria government web site. The instructions were in English, I appreciated it.

My appointment time I requested was set for 8:40am.  I was seen about 9:00am.  I would advise that you be proactive and walk up to the window, introduce yourself and notify them your name and appointment time.  This way they know you are present.  You have to be outgoing, don't be shy, as you won't find a list of appointments for that day posted on a wall or a "Now serving #32" digital LED system.

I spoke with Lina Maria Salcedo Bolivar, Consul de Primera.  She was pleasant and helpful and gave us her business card.

That the office is only open about 5 hours per day is not ideal, I did have several time slots available online when requesting an appointment.  I would advise that you try and schedule your appointment prior to 9am.  Go for 8am and be the first!

To the critics who complain about their appointment starting not starting time, have you never been to a government office?  Of course the appointment starting time will vary as the day progesses and as people having appointments before yours have an affect on the schedule.  If the people having appointments at 8:00am and 8:20am each consume an additional 30 minutes past the average time anticipated, that means your appointment will begin late.

Can you schedule appointments at similar government offices in the US such as the BMV/Department of moto vehicles? Usually not as they only offer a first come/first serve policy and those who come in the afternoon probably have to wait twice as long as those who arrive early.
