UPDATE: It's been 7 months now with no reply. I just received a recorded phone message from them but unfortunately I don't speak fluent Mandarin. I was put on hold until a real person came to the phone. I said I don't speak Mandarin and was wondering if there could be a Cantonese/English speaker but they just hung up on me. What kind of work do you people do? Do you think your time is more important than everyone elses? I'm still in the process of helping my mother renew her passport. Unfortunately it has already been over 2 months and she still does not have a new passport. Renewal of a passport should not take this long. All they've said is they cannot identify my mom's identity even though they took her old passport, copies of her green card, social security card, and marriage license. The website is not clear with every single piece of detail that they require of you during this process. The teller who "helped" us made us go back and forth to the copy machines 4 separate times because she couldn't be bothered to just tell us what she wanted in one conversation. I understand that it is frustrating to deal with people all day but it is incredibly insulting to see my mom be treated like an idiot by this woman. She is old, her comprehension is slower, and all she wanted was to get through the process as painlessly as possible and without trouble to anyone else. You would think an employee would want a smooth process as well. Unfortunately neither of us speak fluent Mandarin but she persisted in speaking to us until she got too annoyed and started speaking to us in Cantonese. If you knew we were trying so hard with another language and yet you speak our language fluently, why are you trying to give us such a hard time? Also, nobody answers the phone. I've been put on hold for over an hour without an answer. This representation of the Chinese government is absolutely horrid. Why would you do this to your own people? We can't even apply for citizenship because they have my mom's original China passport.

Most comments here are unnecessary, some people just want to be greeted with a red carpet and back massages. My visit to the consulate was nothing more than what I expected, very similar to any RMV. If you FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS on the website you will not have any problems. The consulate officials are pretty straight forward, they are very quick and efficient. I noticed so many people were unprepared (No document copies, hand-written forms, missing documents, etc..) It's not their responsibility to make sure YOU have all documentation. My visit was a quick IN-and-OUT, the lines moved pretty fast, gave all information that was requested and received a ticket to pick up my passport with a visa after 4 business days. That's it, simple stuff... I hope this helps, Good luck

The staff was friendly, helpful, well informed, welcoming! We feel that we are back in the warm embrace of the socialist motherland🇨🇳 Great location which Times Square is only a 10-minute walk away. Overall feel of place was charming with a variety of Chinese specialized artworks. The food in the it's owned cafeteria is the most authentic Chinese food in NYC. I stay in a lot of hotels in NYC but mission's guest house is the best. I love my motherland. 🇨🇳

Horrible horrible service. I've been there many times and each time it was really unhappy experience. The staff are rude all the time. Policies change all the time. Nobody picks up the phone. You have to fly to New York to ask a simple question since no one answers you by line or by mail. Just horrible. Can't be worse.

Most people there are nice, few are rude. Just think about DMV, you will be happy since this place get things done. You may want to bring a book since cell phone is not allowed, waiting time was much longer than I expected. I spent one hour doing copies and photos (since people ahead me do not know how to operate the machine, it should only take 20mins), another hour waiting for my turn to renew my passport. After doing my research, I thought I showed up fully prepared. But I still was forced to retake the photos. Oh, btw that copy machine does NOT give you changes. It cost 25 cents to copy one page. I put one dollar in, got one page copied, it won’t give the rest back. So you may also want to bring several quarters in case your copied documents do not meet the requirements.
