We rode the train the day after Thanksgiving and it was lovely. In winter the train only goes to Cascade, a small picnic grounds in the mountains with a large warm fire pit. You get a 40-min lunch stop there before heading home, and you can pack a lunch or buy their box lunch in advance. We rode in the standard car, with 2 people per bench, and it was fairly comfortable, though it's a snug fit for 2 average adults. There was also a open, standing-only observation car that anyone could visit, along with a concessions car that served everything from coco to cookies to beer.

Amazing railway. A journey through the San Juan Mountains from Durango to Silverton, whilst watching lakes, rivers, valleys, and forests is a trip worth to remember!

The views that you can see from this train are breathtaking. This is something that I recommend seeing at least once in your life. The train itself is an old steam engine. There is a concession cart on board that sells food and drinks, as well as some suveniors. The staff was friendly and seemed to enjoy their jobs. If you decide to go, don't forget your glasses and cameras!!

There are spectacular views impossible to see from the road. It's well worth the money and the day to see the San Juan forest from this unique and historic perspective.

The railway is a National Historic Landmark between Durango and Silverton Colorado. This railway was built to transport silver and gold ore that was mined from the San Juan Mountains. This train ride is a very scenic route since it has about 45 miles of track and lots of turns. Since 1881 this train been traveling the tracks from Durango to Silverton. If you want to go one way it will take about 3.5 hours and there is a big delay in Silverton, because they need to examine the train to make sure it is in good running condition. While the delay you can go eat, visit shops, take pictures and more. Go jump on the train now; you will not turn back!!
