Story

We provide the latest in technological advances to relieve pain associated with bone, muscle, nerve damage, and any other painful illnesses including cancer related pain - improving your quality of life. Florida Pain Medicine focuses on and implements a multi-disciplinary approach to treat your pain with the latest technological advancements including interventional pain procedures, physical therapy prescriptions, modalities such as TENS unit or ultrasound therapy, and pain medication management. We perform a variety of procedures at the hospital and ambulatory surgery centers as needed, required by insurance, or by patient choice. We also offer state of the art pain procedures, which are performed in the office, thus saving the patients the financial cost of their medical care as opposed to procedure done in the hospital or at ambulatory surgery centers. At Florida Pain Medicine, we find that by using a multi-disciplinary approach, we can often minimize or avoid long-term pain medications.

The specialty of Pain Medicine is relatively new, although Algology (the study of pain) has been present before the age of Hippocrates. As studies regarding pain mechanisms and treatments advance our knowledge, our further understanding of the mechanisms of pain generation allows us to apply more complex and useful therapies to control your pain.

Pain Medicine as a specialty is concerned with the evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of painful disorders. The diagnosis relies on a thorough history and pain-oriented physical examination, including interpretation of diagnostic tests and imaging studies such as X-rays or MRIs, and may require specialized diagnostic and therapeutic interventional pain procedures.

Although many surgical afflictions are best treated by operative measures such as Neurosurgical or Orthopedic surgeries, a majority are treated successfully with conservative procedure treatments that deal with pain management via injections, nerve blocks, and spinal/peripheral nerve stimulation amongst various other interventional pain medicine therapies.

Sometimes it is not possible to completely alleviate all of the patient’s pain. Our goal, however, is to provide functional restoration so that patient can resume as much of a normal life as possible and enjoy doing the activities which they previously enjoyed prior to the onset of their pain so they may. At Florida Pain Medicine, we strive to RESTORE FUNCTION & RELIVE LIFE.

I had an awful experience at Florida Pain Medicine with Dr. Bhalani yesterday during my first (and subsequently last) appointment. I arrived at 8:45 for an 8:50 appointment. To be fair, I was asked to arrive 30 minutes early for my first appointment, but due to accidents along Highway 60 and I-75 (which was down to one lane), my drive was almost two hours long instead of the typical 45 minutes. At 9:10 I asked the front desk how long the wait would be. She informed me that Dr. Bhalani had another new-patient appointment and a follow-up appointment to see before me, and also let me know that most new-patient appointments take an hour. I was surprised, since my appointment was for 8:50 but it sounded like I wouldn't be seen until after 10:00. I asked the front desk personnel if she could confirm this thought, to which she repeated herself, "most new-patient appointments take an hour, and he also has a follow-up to see." I asked again to confirm if that meant I wouldn't be seen until after 10:00, and she, once again, repeated herself. Annoyed, I said, "Yes, I understand, I'm just asking for some clarification about timing. Will I be seen after 10?" She rolled her eyes, smirked at the other woman sitting next to her, and said "Yes. That's what that means." I was frustrated by her attitude and by that news. As I said, I had sat in a car for almost two hours at this point and was now looking at sitting in the office's uncomfortable waiting room chairs for an hour and a half. I was a bit rash in my reaction and posted on their facebook wall that a patient should not have to wait an hour and a half when the clinic will cancel appointments that are later than 15 minutes. This felt disrespectful to me since the doctor's time is to be respected with the 15-minute rule, but patients' times are not. I could have waited to see if the hour and a half was accurate, but I didn't. I'll admit that was my fault. I should try to save reactions for when I'm not in so much pain. Luckily, I did not wait that long to be seen. I was taken back by a young woman who was very pleasant, who helped get my information into the system and asked the usual first patient questions. I was then seen by Dr. Bryan Thomas, a fellow who is working with Dr. Bhalani. Bryan was very friendly, and I was starting to feel much better about the visit thanks to his welcoming attitude and openness about things I could do to improve my pain. I thought to myself, "You shouldn't react so quickly - you should delete the post." I didn't get a chance to yet at that moment. Shortly after, Dr. Bhalani entered the room and spoke quickly about my options. After he went through those, which I was pleased with, his tone became even more dire. "There's one more thing," he said. "When you lie on our facebook page, it begins our relationship in a bad way. You're making it so I can't trust you as a patient." I was surprised that he had seen the post, as I hadn't posted it very long ago, and because I was told that he was incredibly busy seeing patients. He continued to lecture me and talk down to me, repeating what he had already said as though I was an idiot. I have never been spoken to by another doctor in such a patronizing, condescending tone. I was completely flabbergasted and trying to hold back tears, as he continued to lecture and tell me how I had ruined his ability to trust me. I tried to get in a few words and finally said, "It also doesn't make a great first impression when you're running so far behind on a first appointment. I was told that I wouldn't see you until after 10:00." He chuckled with even more condescension in his tone and cited the exact times that I was seen by each person, telling me that those were excellent times. I don't disagree - I was pleased with the actual times I was ended up seeing. I was not pleased with the attitude of the front desk, or how I was told I wouldn't be seen until after 10:00, or with the way that I was treated by the doctor himself.

I have only 5 stars for the location in Westley Chapel. Everyone is very pleasant. Dr. Stephanie Epting is excellent. She explains everything in detail so you can understand what your problem is. She doesn't rush you out of the office and answers any concerns you have. I would highly recommend this office for pain management.

Probably one of the worst experiences I've ever had with a specialist clinic. I arrived early to my appointment with the paperwork completed then was left to sit in the lobby for over an hour past my appointment time before I was brought back to a room. The nurse checked my vitals then took the disk with my images on it and was so impatient she couldn't get it to work when she put it in her computer, but when she stopped clicking on things, it worked fine. After about 5 minutes with the nurse, she left and said the doctor would be in shortly. I was left alone to wait again for another 30+ minutes until Dr. Epting came in and spoke in a way that said she was so far more worried about liability than helping someone. For ten minutes she sat in the room basically talking in a circle, "Well, you could get the treatment, but it won't help do anything." Because technically /it/ doesn't do anything nor does it apparently aid the body even if it makes the body relax? I don't know. It was 10 minutes of "it won't do anything, but we should try it but it won't do anything and I can't speak on it further." Then she leaves and I'm left in the room for another 15-20 minutes only for someone to pop in and go, "oh, you can leave," like they forgot I was there. Then I head out. Once I got home, I had a message from one of the people there saying, "Oh, you didn't give us a urine sample," when nothing on their website said anything about a urine sample and I was just there for a consultation? They even offered me pain meds and I said I didn't want any. After talking to my chiro who recommended someone at this location, she said it was beyond strange they'd ask for urine for a consultation and the in-house pain management clinic they had didn't do urine samples for consultations. So. What a waste of 2.5 hours of mostly being ignored and then being told no help exists and I'm doomed. Finally, and the most ridiculous of it all, this little thing, billed as an office visit, was $830. You've got to be joking me. What an over-priced scam house. I went to the ER just weeks before for the same issue and they gave me medication and a cat scan for $1,000. $830 for an 'office visit' of being ignored and told you can't be helped is beyond ridiculous. Never going back.
