Fort McClary is one of the best Fort/Park experiences I've had in a long while. I'd never even heard of it, but the wife and I were in York and saw the sign, so we decided to go check it out - as it was only six miles away. We were not disappointed. First off, the park is beautiful and well-maintained, with lots of nooks and crannies to explore, and gorgeous views of the water. Second, the park only asks for a small donation per person, making this place in particular a very low-cost, interesting destination to bring children. They'll be able to play in and around the old block house and grounds for hours. Will definitely come back at a later date.

We've now been to visit twice, and have enjoyed the views and history very much both times. The second time we allowed for more time to explore allowing us to actually see and enjoy more and more of the whole fort. Beautiful views!!!! Very interesting history and we very much enjoyed the actual work it took to make the fort what it is. Loved how informational the signs posted were to learn about the fort. I would recommend allowing for at least 2 or 3 hours to really be able to enjoy the fort for what it is and really explore. Great for active people, couples, and families as it is a bit of a workout to get around, very hilly. I would recommend very comfortable and supportive footwear, no high heels here. Also while you'd be able to enjoy some of the views from a wheelchair, not much of the fort is wheelchair accessible unfortunately.

Very interesting historical site. And a great example of fortifications of the era. I have been multiple times and enjoy walking the grounds on a nice day and looking into the bay.

Located right over the New Hampshire boarder, Fort McClary, can be found in Kittery Point, Maine. Fort McClary is a historic site today and well maintained for what is left. Originally, used for defense anyone approaching the harbor of Portsmouth, New Hampshire and the US Naval Shipyard. This place is great for adults, kids, even dogs. Plenty of room to have a picnic and enjoy the beautiful scenery. There are trails. - They are short, but fun. Unfortunately, the fort itself, is not handicap friendly. The stairs are very narrow and they turn making it almost impossible to even bring a stroller for a child. Otherwise, we had a fantastic time and we hope to go back soon on a nice sunny day and enjoy a picnic! Admission is free but donations are always accepted. Bring the whole family!

Beautiful view but no hiking area. Fort is fun for kids to explore. Honor system fee payment.
