TL;DR there was pot left in my car and I was detained at the Canadian border.

I rented an economy car from the Hertz in Newport, RI, last week. I planned to drive it to Quebec, Canada, where I'd work on an app in solitude for a while. Here's what happened.  

When I picked up the car around 1pm on December 6th, I looked around the outside but I did not notice the smoke smell until the representative Eugene had left. Also I remember when I put my luggage in the back seat -- when I was leaving Newport around 2:30pm -- that there was a broken (I think?) electric shaver in the seat back pocket of the drivers seat. I remember thinking that the car wasn't well-cleaned, and I planned on telling the reps when I returned the car.

Several hours later I arrived at the US-Canada border, where Canadian border patrol asked me several pointed questions about tobacco and marijuana at the drive up window, and then asked me to pull in for a secondary inspection of my car. The guards asked if everything in the car was mine. I completely forgot about the broken electric razor, and said that everything was mine. Well, then the guards found marijuana seeds and scattered marijuana junk under the driver seat of my rental car when I was crossing the border at about 8pm on December 6th. They held me for questioning, and I was there for about at least an hour. To be clear, I am extremely careful to not involve myself with anything drug-related, and I certainly wanted nothing to do with marijuana that day, and especially at an international border.

I was released by the Canadian border guards, who I believe were either being gracious or convinced that the marijuana was not mine only due to the rest of the "evidence" under the seat (pics attached). I called Hertz roadside assistance on my way to my Airbnb and spoke to Pam. I told her the situation, and she was apologetic. She said "I don't know why Hertz doesn't clean their cars". When she went to check with her manager about what to do with the car, she responded to me saying that I should vacuum out the drug substance myself before I attempt to return across the border back into the United States. I told her that was an unacceptable solution and that as soon as I arrived at my destination, I would take my belongings out of the car and not get back in it. Roadside Assistance Pam said she would send me something (I interpreted via email) to resolve the issue and that someone would be in touch.

Having still received nothing as of late morning on the 7th, I contacted Hertz again and they told me to call 911 there in Levis, Quebec, Canada.  I contacted the Canadian police who came to the car and kindly told me that because it wasn't a bag of pot and that it was spread all over the carpet under the seat, that it was my problem to deal with. I called Hertz roadside assistance and asked that the car be towed and for a replacement. I got a replacement car from Quebec Hertz. They were very nice about it.

Fast forward to turning the replacement car back into the Newport Hertz: I told them the situation and they said, "it was just seeds?!" As though it was no biggie. I told them I would not be renting from them again. Later that day I saw an additional charge of around $33 show up on my credit card statement from Hertz, even though I turned in the new, drug-free car clean and filled with gas. I'm not sure what this was about. What an ordeal! Really, really, do not rent from this Hertz!

Photos are inaccurate. Located in the Newport Visitor's center to the right of the Marriott on Americas Cup. (They moved earlier this year 2016). Great location, easy to get in and get out. Great customer service.

I rent from these guys once a week, and it is a real pleasure.  Great sevice and a friendly, helpful bunch of guys.  Very different from, say, Enterptise.

I had a wonderful experience with renting a car. I had no idea how easy it would be to rent a car. The moment I walked in the door it was a pleasant experience. I was greeted with a friendly hello. The car they rented me was awesome and very clean. They had it started and the air conditioner on. Returning the car was just as easy. When I came back I walked in the door and they greeted me by name before I reached the counter.  Thank you Hertz in Newport - I will be back! Merrie
