I rented from Hertz about 10 years ago and Hertz had given me a car that someone has thrown up in at the Roselle Park location and had to change the car. Had a hard time getting my deposit returned after returning the car. 

I recently rented a Crossover for a vacation and the car was dirty and we had to wash the car. Also, they have PlatePass in their window and was told that we can use our EZPass if we kept the PlatePass closed. After returning two weeks later there was a charge from PlatePass. We drove to Florida and the PlatePass ONLY picked up Florida, was then told EZPass does not pick up in Florida. Then there was a charge on our PlatePass for GWB and we cannot be in Florida and GWB in New York at the same time.  The Assistant Manager at Hertz was very rude to my husband and then sent him to voicemail when he tried to explain the trouble we were having. We spent the evening and half day trying to straighten out the Passes. We were told that there was a $24.95 administration fee ($4.95 per day) our statement showed 3 days we were charged, do the math 3 x $4.95. I will never rent from Hertz again, they will not inform you of this and will tell you you signed off for these fees. Read everything! I wouldn't give them any stars but had to choose one.

Employees were nice car was dirty and smelled of cigarette smoke... there was even a wrapper from a pack of newports under the driver's seat.  Go somewhere else
