I'm from South Carolina/Connecticut.

I can honestly say this place is a breath of fresh air for Southern cooking away from home. The service was efficient and friendly. Thanks for a pleasant experience.

My mother-in-law was visiting from China, and having already taken her to San Francisco's Mission District for her first tacos, we decided to go to Oakland for her first taste of soul food.

Should have stayed in SF.

Nearly everything about the experience was lazy and unpleasant. The food was precooked and served cafeteria-style, and barely warm at that (the gravy on my mashed potatoes, in particular, was cold enough to have a disturbing, congealed mouthfeel). Everything was heavy on the salt, light on the spices. They ran out of cornbread just as the dinner rush was getting underway. Tables took a long time to be cleared, and the guy clearing them wore a little radio on a strap around his neck that competed with the TVs, making conversation nearly impossible.

I'm giving them two stars because my mother-in-law liked her jambalaya, but I won't be back.

The service was great.  The food was good and greasy. Had a oxtail large with greens black eye peas, peach cobbler and my aide order of yams that I did not get with my order. What a day to spend a mother's day at Lena

I'm from Chicago....

Soul food has a specific taste.  It didn't have that umps,  but it was OK.  I would go back again if I was here visiting. 
Reasonable prices for the portions. I had left overs.

We went there for a scheduled event. Prepaid for a pre-selected menu. When we arrived they did not provide all of the items that we pre-selected. I will say the short ribs while little fatty are amazing. Honesty I  wanted was some oxtails.....
