This is one of the most beautiful locations in North Carolina.  

The ruins of the dam are ready to explore with clear paths and rock outcroppings.  You can see all of the details of the stone work and masonry up close.  There are huge sand bars that were created in Hurricane Matthew that you can fish from.  There is a one half mile kayak trail upstream from the dam to a giant, incredible log jam that blocks the river.  The park facility is updated with new fencing, picnic tables, and some play equipment.  ZPD does a great job keeping the atmosphere safe and comfortable.

You won't be disappointed.

PS: The history of this dam includes its disuse, neglect, and destruction.  Rebuilding the dam would erase these important parts of the dam's life.  A new park facility will draw even more interest and support to our wonderful historical landmark.

Love this natural area. The town will be adding bathroom facilities in the future, but it's still a great place to explore the river.
