Cliffs of the Neuse State Park

Story

Cliffs of the Neuse State Park is a North Carolina state park in Seven Springs, Wayne County, North Carolina in the United States. It is located near Seven Springs, North Carolina and covers 1094acre along the southern banks of the Neuse River. It has a swimming area, camp sites, hiking trails, fishing areas, and picnic areas. The park's museum features exhibits about the geology and natural history of the cliffs and the park. Extending for, the series of cliffs rise 90ft above the water. Layers of sand, clay, seashells, shale and gravel form the multicolored cliff face, a rainbow of white, tan, yellow and brown.HistoryThe cliffs were formed when a fault in the Earth's crust shifted millions of years ago. The Neuse River followed this fault line and, over time, cut its course through layers of sediment deposited by shallow seas that had earlier covered the coastal plain. A portion of the river took a bend against its bank and the water's erosive action slowly carved Cliffs of the Neuse.Much of the human history of the area centers around the river. The Tuscarora and Saponi Indian tribes once occupied much of the land between the Neuse and Pamlico rivers. What is now the park used to be a ceremonial ground and a gathering place for hunting expeditions. The river was also used for travel into the surrounding wilderness.

Cliffs of the Neuse has lots to offer. I hiked the whole state park trails in about 2 1/2 hrs. If you go onto the bird trail there is a great spot to look out over the cliff to the river below. The lake looks like a nice place to swim, they even has a diving board. The lake has a fee to swim (not sure the cost) and also offers paddle boats and canoes. There is also a nice look out over the cliff by the Spanish Moss Trail. You'll have to be sure to stop by the park office to see the bear!

Today, I checked off Cliffs of the Neuse from my bucket list! It did not disappoint. Hiking was awesome. The entire park was breathtakingly beautiful. Most trails are easy enough for all ages. Some deep inclines but plenty of space of incredible scenery and wildlife to detract you while you recoup.

We loved this campground! My wife and I were in town for the weekend and had a wonderful stay. The staff was extremely helpful and hard working. The sites are well maintained and offer privacy. The trails were easy to access and had wonderful views of the river. Highly recommend this campground.

We recently moved from Tennessee and are used to the hikes there. For this area it's a nice place to walk and bring the dogs (except to the lake area). The walks are fairly easy. Would love to come back and go kayaking or canoeing.

Cliffs of the Neuse is a state park about 15 minutes south of Goldsboro. The park protects an area of surprisingly steep cliffs along the Neuse River. There are about 5 miles of hiking trails, picnic areas, a visitor center with exhibits on the park and a man-made lake with swimming and boat rentals in the summer. We took our dog for a hike here and had a great time. Although short, the trails here lead through a diversity of ecosystems. The Spanish Moss Trail, my favorite trail, runs past the Neuse River floodplain and then loops back over a steep cliff with many steps. I thought the contrast of cypress swamps next to tall cliffs was just amazing. We visited in February so no issue with bugs. Given the swampy conditions, I expect the insects could be a nuisance in the summer time. Overall, it's a great little park to enjoy nature and get some exercise.
