Students. Many students. Got there at 8 pm to make sure we had a table and the place was quiet and empty. By 9:15 you could barely hear yourself think. We had some so so drinks. Tater tots good snack but not great. Wings were good! At the end of the night we wanted the check and despite searching for the server for 30 min, she was nowhere to be found. Both bars told us they couldn't help. So we ended up reluctantly leaving without settling the tab she had scanned our card. Annoying though is that she proceeded to take 20% gratuity! While she did a great job until vanishing, I would not have gone further than 10% at this point.
Nut friendly establishment: I don't think much of their bar food has nuts if any. I went for a larger event that booked out the top floor and our catered food had no nuts. A cozy bar in Shadyside that is bigger on the inside than it looks. The first floor has a beer hall-like vibe with high tables to seat 2-4, and a bench with tables and chairs to seat 1-2. The bar is very long with a decently large well to mid-tier liquor selection There's a raised area in the back with more seating. Upstairs after a very narrow stairway are two more bar areas and tables for larger groups, including a large communal table. The heating upstairs is strong. There is nowhere to leave a jacket except on your chair, and you definitely won't need one when all of the heaters are on. Electronics darts machines are present on both the first and second floor, costing $0.75/person/round. There are nightly drink specials and a happy hour M-F 5-7PM. Normal beer prices are $4.25 for something like a Bud Light, $5.25 for mid-tier lagers like a blue moon, $6.25 for a draft craft beer like a local IPA, and $7.25 for stronger craft beers. I ordered a long island iced tea which was $7.50 and made reasonably well a little light and diluted by too much ice. The food was reasonably good bar food with the crab rangoons being a nice crispy surprise. The chicken fingers were better than Stack'd and also crispy. I didn't try the pizza but it looked good. Two major blunders happened while I was at Mario's: Firstly, I asked one of the bartenders if they had anything local on draft, and she said no. This was blatantly wrong as I noticed when I went back for a second round, as the Brotherly Love Hazy IPA is local enough to Pittsburgh. They also had several bottles of a local lager that was not the best. Secondly, as we were starting a game of darts, the machine froze. We had to flag a bartender down to reset the machine, and they refused to refund us for the cost of the game. It's a small amount but this rudeness in service was off-putting and we didn't want to try to play another round if the machine would eat our money again. Overall, a nice place to host events or grab a cheap drink during a special. Got a little full as I left around 9PM on a Friday, but there was still space available to be comfortable.
What a rip off. We recently stopped by for happy hour and were taken aback by the Convenience Fee added to our check. it was an additional 3.7% added to our check. When I asked, "what was it?", it was for using a credit card. What!!!! most credit card companies charge 2.5% and they are just ripping off folks and you don't know until you get your bill. Also, i checked the check and, of course, they tried to charge us non-happy prices on a few drinks. I made them correct it. AVOID THIS PLACE.
Great Buffalo Bills backer bar. Fees and service are very good also!
The bad outweighs the good. The good: the drinks; the appetisers; attentive server; restroom had both paper towels and air dryer, and motion sensor water faucet had good flow of water that lasted a good while. The bad: restroom has strong smell of urine, graffiti not cleaned off of walls; wife said women's restroom smelled also; ordered large Hawaiian pizza...it had about 5 pieces of pineapple for the whole pizza! That's less than one piece of pineapple per slice, ruined the experience. Didn't blame sever, I tipped him $10 on a $24 tab. Was with friends and I ate some of the food they ordered. Chips and salsa was good and pretzel was excellent. Chicken wings were great. We've been to worse places and we might go back. Hope they clean the restroom more often. Will not order Hawaiian pizza. Will order everything else.
Decent food, decent vibes. Small menu but I'm not good with choices anyway
Good happy hour drink specials half off we’ll drinks and draft beers, currently no happy hour food specials. Disappointed with the “mile high pile” of onion rings for $9 that was actually 7 onion rings. They were tasty but the portion seemed stingy for the price. There is a credit card surcharge that is not advertised.
Twice in the past couple of months, I have left this place feeling like something was put in my drink by one of the bartenders. I inquired with some other friends to see if this was a common feeling and multiple people have said they felt this way as well. I just saw another google review from a girl saying she thinks her friend's drink was spiked by a bartender. AND a complete stranger I met at another bar over the weekend said, out of nowhere, that "something shady is going on at Mario's, I think they spiked my girlfriend's drink." All of these instances seem too similar to be considered a coincidence at this point. I truly think something is going on here.
Sadly not impressed with this place. Great location, impressive esthetics. But the place seems poorly run a staff does not seem like they even want to be there. I don't think the management or ownership has cared much about this place in a long time. Seems to me that they are banking on the Mario's name and the location and everything else is just an afterthought. I've been here quite a few times and always unsatisfied…. Sorry
The place has two floors and TVs galore. Staff are very nice and attentive. Food is great with just about anything you want.
