This place is very interesting! I have often wondered as to how/why the local Native American tribes used this petroglyph and the surrounding area. I recently visited the Hemet Maze Stone again for the first time in years, after reading about how many other stones have been located in Southern California, in order to see if what else (besides the maze stone) might be related to the purpose of the maze itself. After looking at different maps of the area (Bing maps was actually the best), I'm starting to think that this might have been an area tied to the local tribe (or tribes) study of astronomy and/or fertility...and/or male and/or female puberty ceremonies? Of course this is just my speculation lol. Nonetheless, this is a gorgeous place to visit and pay respect to our local area's TRUE founders. I'm no expert in any of the relevant fields of study, but over the past view years, I have tried to read some of the recent scholarly work on our area's local tribes...partly to deal with my own confusion as to why the early Spanish and/or missionaries, were getting historical credit in places like Redlands CA, for so many areas of agriculture and irrigation that the earlier Pre-Columbian tribes in Southern California had seemingly already used for centuries. (Ex. the racist descriptions of how the Zanja was developed in Redlands.) It seems to me that Southern California has a wealth of still undiscovered pre-Columbian Native American technological and political advancements worthy of reverence, and so I hope that soon our local government maintained historical sites (like the maze stone) will stop taking the work of older anthropologists (like Kroeber) as gospel and instead provide school children visiting these monuments with information from the most recent scholarly accounts of Southern California history as well.
