I was very nervous about ever needing this hospital because I had even heard doctors talk badly about it let alone what patients had said. I can only speak for my direct experience. My toddler was taken in by ambulance having severe breathing trouble. They were quick and good. I have medical knowledge and would recognize if things weren't handled properly. In fact the doctor was so attentive to the situation and didn't overreact which could have easily been done in the state she was in (gasping for air). He recognized that she was scared and had everyone leave (staff) while he observed her. Ordered treatments and referred us to Children's by ambulance for specialized care. By the time we got to children's she was breathing easy again thanks to the ER doctor at Meritis quick appropriate actions.

Meritus Health System has ruined the health care in washington county. I don't have enough room here to explain full details on how my wife was under-treated with chest pains with little to no communication between drs and patient. I did file a formal complaint with patient advocate and after multiple phone calls we did receive an apology letter and that their procedures would be under review. Will they make changes ? I doubt it. Unless you are in danger of bleeding out or an adult with a broken bone DO NOTgo there. (Side Note : Approx 1 year ago they would not treat my granddaughter with a broken leg. We had to go to Childrens in DC. What a nightmare that was.) Going to meritus is a complete waste of time and money.

I am now 6k in debt to because this hospital turned me into a collection agency because I couldn't afford to pay them 6k after multiple visits and them still not knowing what my problem was and then accusing me of faking my pain to cover their incompetent asses. Only worse hospital than this is a tie between washington/baltimore in Glen Burnie and some back alley operation in Mexico.

ORIGINAL RATING — 1*️⃣ — One of the most deceiptful organizations I've ever had to deal with. They make promises about a "Patient Advocate" getting back in touch with me; that person never called me back, going on now for two months. I just received today (4/24/2014) a bill dated 4/21, of services provided on 3/26/14, and at the bottom they state "Your account will be considered for collection action if no payment in 10 days." Even though I owe Meritus not a dime. UPDATE ON MY RATING — December 2017 — 4*️⃣ — A lot has changed with Patient Accounts. Soon after the horrendous experiences I had in early 2014, I had the opportunity to get acquainted with and then speak at length with Meritus' then recently installed CFO, Thomas T Chan. He immediately apologized for the experiences I had, and spoke about both shorter and longer term Patient Accounts changes he and his department envisioned. To handle the specific issues with billing, he put me in touch with a specialist within his administration, who was very kind, and extremely helpful. Eventually Tom terminated the contract with the company which handled patient accounts (so poorly overall, as it turned out, not just with me), and brought it within Meritus (if I understand it correctly) here in Hagerstown. WOW, WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!! I've continued to have dealings with this group, and it CONTINUES to be night and day. I've experienced nothing but courtesy, an attitude of, "We're here to help YOU!!!" Almost without fail, there a friendly tone of voice! Sure, there are still certain details which are frustrating, mostly having to do with an inability to go to Meritus website, and be able to see ALL MY charges and credits IN ONE PLACE!!! But Tom Chan assures me that too is coming as they are in the process of upgrading many of their systems. It can't come fast enough for me. At least, though, in the meantime, I can reach friendly and helpful individuals at Patient Accounts!!

Rudest hospital I've ever been to. The staff don't care about your needs or what symptoms you have. They say all the tests are normal when in reality their not. Horrible staff. Doctor never came back to read results. Couldn't even find the chart and had to use a blank piece of printer paper. If I had a choice, I would never go here again!
