A MUST VISIT. Colorado history at its finest! Expect to spend 2-4 hours taking in the vast collection of memorabilia and artifacts. The gas chamber on-site is an eye-opener. many children could benefit from a visit to this facility. Check Groupon for discount tickets. Buy the $1 tour book. It supports the museum and it is a great tool for a self-guided tour. There is a park nearby, so make it a picnic day!

Fun really well put together museum. Really good cell room displays you can mostly walk in and read about. Also has a great gift shop!! Truly a gem and a great historic piece. Won't take you long to get through but absolutely worth it.

Going here was a really neat adventure. Much thanks to Tonya for showing me around and explaining some of the preserved history there. Everything was well laid out and easy to access. If you're a corrections nerd, much like myself, you'll really love this place...and if not, you get a great sneak peek in to what a real prison used to look like long ago. Not to mention the spook factor in the basement. Play your cards right, you may have a brush with the paranormal. Visit and enjoy...you'll be glad you did.

When you get to Canon City, continue to drive straight and take right on 3rd Street??? I tbink this is the right street but it will take you to the prison. Pass the old large vintage house and you will see the museum. Don't turn left by the old vintage home, yhis is actually the men's prison that is still be used for the prisoners. The museum facility was once the women's prison. There is quite alot to see. Adult price was $8.00 to enter and you can choose eiyher the booklet (which you turn in after or buy it for $1.00 or do audible) There is quite alot to see upstairs and downstairs, but those stairs going down are small (need to be careful) there are items of history in each cells, some you can enter, others you can't but can look inside. Showed alot of made knives - called shanks that were made by prisoners. Very interesting information if you like to learn what goes on in the prison system from years back to now.
