National Mall

Story

The National Mall is a national park in downtown Washington, D.C., the capital of the United States. The National Park Service (NPS) of the U.S. Department of the Interior administers the National Mall, which is part of its National Mall and Memorial Parks unit. The term National Mall commonly includes areas that are also officially part of neighboring West Potomac Park and Constitution Gardens to the southwest, and often is taken to refer to the entire area between the Lincoln Memorial on the west and east to the United States Capitol grounds, with the Washington Monument dividing the area slightly west of its midpoint. A smaller designation, sometimes referred to as the Mall proper, excludes both the Capitol grounds and the Washington Monument grounds, applying only to an area between them. The National Mall contains and borders a number of museums of the Smithsonian Institution, art galleries, cultural institutions and various memorials, sculptures and statues and receives approximately 24 million visitors each year.

A place of both high activity and solitude. Few places in the world offer the dichotomy of the National Mall. From the daily activity of commuters and tourists, to the crowds watching the fireworks on July 4, to the solitude of a morning jog or nighttime stroll along the broad gravel paths on each side of the expanse of lawn that provides the axis from the Capitol to the Washington Monument, mid terminus of the WWII Memorial to the reflecting pool and Lincoln Memorial. The Mall is in the best condition it has ever been, with a massive turf restoration and irrigation project directed under the Obama Administration. I visit the Mall often and would do so nearly every day if I could. It is my personal Disney World. A playground for the cultured. Along the Mall are some of the great museums of the world, all of them free. Hard to believe. If you've traveled to Europe, you realize how lucky we are to have free access to these museums placed along the East portion of the Mall to the Capitol, most of which are part of the Smithsonian Institution, an educational institution founded by a man who surprisingly never set foot in America. Contrast these museums with Europe (or New York City), where you have to wait in long lines and pay hefty admission fees. It's slightly ambitious to walk the length of it given how often you want to stop along the way, but runners will greatly enjoy the routes the Mall has to offer. I've said a lot, but I could never say enough about the greatest place in one of the great cities of the world.

This was my second visit to the National Mall, I came to Washington to run the Army and Navy half marathon in 2017. Always an interesting cultural experience - I found myself between pro-Trump and anti-Trump rallies that were each coalescing at either end of The Mall. Very interesting, to say the least. I've also had the pleasure of visiting the mall during a quieter time in 2012, and thoroughly enjoyed myself. Washington is a gorgeous city, and I highly recommend to all that they see it at least once.

Great experience. Air and Space is great for the whole family. The Natural History museum is awesome for science buffs. Plus, there are great views of the monuments and all the museums are free or low cost. Great place to walk around. Capitol building is within walking distance. Many good food trucks and restaurants around.

Honestly I was not overly excited to visit the national Mall because I've seen so many pictures and it is such a basic place to go, but the architecture and design is something I was stunned with. The Lincoln memorial I recommend the most because I could not believe the size and scale until I was there. It was actually breath taking. The Washington monument is nice to look at at night especially. Actually I recommend visiting both monuments at night.

We live in this beautiful country and DC has in the past 30 years has become a world class city. (Regardless of who is occupying the white house) Safe, great food, lots to do and to see, world class museums and most for free. I usually go several times a year. Especially in the spring for the cherry blossoms which are just amazing. The portrait gallery has just unveiled one of the most powerful paintings of our past president Barack Obama and his wife Michelle. You gotta go...
