Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial

Story

The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial is located in West Potomac Park in Washington, D.C., next to the National Mall. The Memorial covers four acres and includes the Stone of Hope, a granite statue of Civil Rights Movement leader Martin Luther King carved by sculptor Lei Yixin. The memorial opened to the public on August 22, 2011, after more than two decades of planning, fund-raising, and construction. The national memorial is America's 395th unit in the National Park Service. The monumental memorial is located at the northwest corner of the Tidal Basin near the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial, on a sightline linking the Lincoln Memorial to the northwest and the Jefferson Memorial to the southeast. The official address of the monument, 1964 Independence Avenue, S.W., commemorates the year the Civil Rights Act of 1964 became law.A ceremony dedicating the Memorial was scheduled for Sunday, August 28, 2011, the 48th anniversary of the "I Have a Dream" speech that Martin Luther King Jr. delivered from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in 1963 but was postponed until October 16 (the 16th anniversary of the 1995 Million Man March on the National Mall) due to Hurricane Irene.

A very impressive busy indeed. MLK deserves the greatest homage we can give him, and the placement of this memorial does just that. I love it. You can see the tidal basin and the Jefferson memorial clearly from this point. Be sure to read the engraved words and signs placed around.

First visit, night tour. Impressive entrance, made more dramatic with the lighting. Memorial and the surrounding area was beautiful, as is the wall with some of MLK's famous lines. Need about at least an hour to totally enjoy and assimilate all so might be better done in the daytime without time constraints as a group tour would have.

One of the top 3 monuments in the DC area hands down. It’s a work of art. It draws MANY visitors in the spring/summer and parking is very limited so come early or be prepared for crowds. The stone work is outstanding and the artist deserves much praise.

Martin Luther King Junior Memorial was an amazing place to just understand the leader better. His thoughts as written are truly profund and carries deep meaning for generations to come. The view from this place is superb and anyone would just enjoy spending time at this memorial.

Couldn’t leave DC without paying my respects to one of the few African American men that the world recognizes as a great leader with a kind heart and a caring spirit, by visiting his memorial. The impact that he had on the world will forever remain. His memorial is a great place to honor him.
