Great food. Great service. Excellent produce. A very wide and wonderful variety of items at competitive prices. I often find great deals at both 41st and Westside markets. Downtown is much smaller but still great.

I am a frequent customer at new leaf and would say they have good quality products however their service is very rude; today I spent 50 dollars on my groceries and when I asked them for quarters back because it is the only way I can do my laundry (there is no cash to coin machine) they refused, I found myself having to beg for quarters, they gave me a few but not the three dollars in quarters necessary to do my laundry explaining that they needed so quarters. I have been going for two years but today after not being able to even choose how I would like my change back after paying 50 dollars, its safe to say I am never going again, so much for a "community" market .

Shopping while black? They'll call the police and ban you. That's EXACTLY what happened to me. 
A few weeks back I was talking to the deli staff about the yummy items in the hot bar. It was obvious English was a second language and I was communicating fine when a staffer, apparently a manager, butted into our conversation. Admittedly I was snappy and said something to the effect of mind your business. He, a tall skinny, young staffer told me to GET OUT or I'M CALLING THE POLICE. 
Had I been white do you think it would be considered reasonable to call the POLICE? Requesting a higher manager to interven was not an option for me. 
Yes I said call the police as if the mere threat would have me scurry out of New Leaf. 
When the police came I told them Yes I was snappy. I was having a hard day and apologized for my rude manner but threatening to call the police on me seemed and is extreme. 
Weeks later I needed run errand for my employer. Went to New Leaf. In fact I had been back there since the incident with no issue. I went to 'that guy's line'. He grabbed my groceries and said GET OUT OR...you guessed it..I'LL CALL THE POLICE. He looked completely unhinged. I asked another checker to request managerial assistance. She obliged and the manager Kelli walked ME around the store to get my purchases as they were put back already.
Again I apologized that this young man was so traumatized of my dismissal of him. 

I felt like I was in colonial times. 
Kelli, the manager took my name and number, said she talked to the staff and call me next week. 
Did she call? Of course NOT. When I called she told me she couldn't have her staff feel unsafe and I needed to be banned for 'awhile'.  When pressed for awhile Kelli told me it's perminate.
I'm a woman in my 40s. Work downtown and dress in buisness casual attire. And I'M BLACK. 
SHAME on you Newleaf to condone this behavior and attitude. 
Santa Cruz is a surfer hippie town in which the heartbeat is conservative. Racism dehumanizes the victim and makes the perpetrators perverse. 
I still love and will love us ALL!
Barring this had EXCELLENT customer service in all departments. The deli has gone above and beyond. The producers have made the best suggestions and the checkers have been efficient and warm.

Their deli is full of wonderful foods.  The stall is friendly and helpful. The entire store is really well done!

They have great red bell peppers there, the same ones Ethan put back when he couldn’t afford one. Maybe give a discount on the bell peppers?
