Story

The Pavek Museum is a museum in St. Louis Park, Minnesota, United States (just west of Minneapolis), which has one of the world's most significant collections of vintage radio and television equipment. It originated in the collection of Joe Pavek, who began squirreling away unique radios while he was an instructor at Dunwoody Institute in 1946. Students of the day were given old radios to disassemble in order to learn their trade, and Pavek was concerned about what might be destroyed in the process.

Few small museums capture technological history, but there are a few. The National Voice of America Museum in Bethany, Ohio and the Pavek Museum in St. Louis Park, MN are must sees for radio history enthusiasts. Pavek has some real gems such as a fully working spark gap transmitter, RCA ribbon microphones and early television apparatus. I would give the Pavek an "A" on props, but a "C" on context: for a younger person, it might be hard to see how these things fit into our lives, but the museum is a constant work in progress and I believe the staff is working on building a better story. It is more refined and revealing each time I visit.

It's important to appreciate our history and previous technology. This place keeps it going. Even fun for kids to see huge size of predecessor phones and radios.

Amazing collection and amazing history. Everything from phonographs to television. Recording media that few people have heard of and working examples of everything. Staff are very knowledgeable and passionate. Well worth the trip.
