I was very pleased by my visits to Payless ShoeSource because the staff was very eager to help me find the shoes most likely to fit, and dealt with what could have been a very dissatisfying situation. The first visit was the usual shoe shopping excursion. I have difficult to fit feet because my feet are long but unusually narrow. The associate who helped me was very knowledgeable about which shoes in my size generally run narrow. Her suggestions didn't quite fit right, but she at least offered some good suggestions. She was surprised by my eventual choice, but obviously glad I found shoes that fit. Unfortunately, I discovered a manufacturing defect in one of the shoes a couple of days later -- the leather going up the side didn't quite reach the stitching along the top, and was separating. (You can run into defects like this with any shoe.) My wife didn't think I could return them, since I didn't notice the defect until after I started wearing the shoes -- which probably is what stretched the shoe to make the defect apparent. But, when I checked the return policy on website, I figured they'd be willing to do an even-up exchange. The associate who helped me on the second trip made no big deal over the exchange and was very gracious in trying to find the 1 pair that the computer said they had. When she was unable to find it, she offered to check other branches in the area, and did so at one of the nearby sites to no avail. She was willing to continue to check other sites, indicating that they would have even compensated me for having to drive out to another location, but I opted to check for another pair on-hand that fit. The replacement shoes that I found turned out to be a little less expensive, and she applied the discount for the membership that I got with the initial purchase. In the end, I got a good replacement for the defective shoes and some money back for my time to do the return, leaving me a very satisfied customer. I still have to only give 4 stars, as there was at least one other associate present who seemed much more intent on doing whatever they were doing, rather than attending to customers, while I was in line and when other customers came up while I was being helped. I'm not complaining too much, though, as the gal helping me was very pleasant to work with. ;-)
