Pedernales Falls State Park

Story

Pedernales Falls State Park is a state park in central Texas in the United States.LocationPedernales Falls State Park is located east of Johnson City. The park is on the Pedernales River, southwest of the river's mouth at Lake Travis.HistoryBefore 1970, the area that is now Pedernales Falls State Park was a working ranch, known as the Circle Bar Ranch. The state of Texas purchased the land for the park in 1970, and the park opened in 1971.RecreationMany of the activities in Pedernales Falls State Park center around the Pedernales River: swimming, tubing, wading and fishing. The park also has a number of picnic areas and campsites, including some primitive campsites that require a hike of two miles or more to reach. There are also of hiking and mountain biking trails, 10 miles of equestrian trails, and 14 miles of backpacking trails.Like many rivers in central Texas, the Pedernales is prone to variable water levels. A sign at the park shows a relatively tranquil river in one picture and a raging wall of muddy water in the next picture, said to be taken only five minutes after the first. The speed at which flash floods can arise along this river has resulted in several deaths at the park.

A local favorite. The drive is worth the trip. There is a smaller pool on the lower end of the falls that is safe to swim but don't swim across because the park borders on private property. The falls are gorgeous at sunset and very picture worthy. Pack up the car and spend the day! Bring food because there's not much around (except distilleries) for 10-15 miles.

Such a unique and beautiful geological formation. The pools are astoundingly deep. The fish are visible along the wall. Unfortunately they don't let you in the water around the feature. I almost think it's worth the fine to do it once! You are allowed to get in the river though. There is a per/person entrance fee.

Spent Thanksgiving here, really nice state park! Saw some foxes, boars & deer. Had a nice bike and hike to the falls. Didn’t get to camp here since a lot of spaces were under construction but peeked in and looked like a nice campground. Would be great for swimming in the summer time.

This place is fantastic. Tons of trails, beautiful views and a great spot for birders. Overnight camping is pleasant and the front desk folks are helpful. Highly recommend anytime of year but spring is best as the variety of wildflowers is astounding. Do it.

Awesome park and camp grounds. Camp sites have a water spicket and 110 volt plug at the driveway to your site. Fire pit, picnic table and a level tent pad make it nice. Get there early as they tend to fill up fast.
