The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania is a railroad museum in Strasburg, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The museum is located on the east side of Strasburg along Pennsylvania Route 741. It is administered by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission with the active support of the "Friends of the Railroad Museum."The museum has more than 100 historic locomotives and railroad cars that chronicle American railroad history. An interactive display allows visitors to "take the throttle" on a simulated run in a real freight locomotive, climb aboard a caboose, inspect a 62-ton locomotive from underneath, view restoration activities via closed-circuit television, enjoy interactive educational programs, and more. The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania was created to provide a historical account of railroading in Pennsylvania by preserving rolling stock, artifacts, and archives of railroad companies of the Commonwealth.Building and groundsThe initial display building opened in 1975, featuring an operating turntable from the Reading Company. The original building was roughly 45,000 square feet in size and included an observation bridge leading across Rolling Stock Hall, allowing visitors to see the trains from a bird's eye point of view. In June 1995, a trainshed-like addition opened, doubling the indoor display capacity to 100,000 square feet.

The best rail museum in the East Coast. My son loves it. There is a lot to do for both children as well as adults. Spend Nat least two hours here but you can easily stretch I out to a day. Make sure to also visit/take a ride on the Strasburg RR next door. They have join tickets to save money.

An excellent place to relive the glory days of the "Pennsy" and cross-country railroading. The static displays are beautifully restored and kept in excellent condition. Ongoing restoration projects are also on display. There are scale model dioramas and interactive model railroads for children of all ages to enjoy. This is also a Blue Star Museum, free for members of the Armed Forces and their families. I was pleasantly surprised by that. Thank you.

Amazing experience. Great family time! Some exhibits let you go inside the train for a closer look and you can learn about the different trains. Inside and outside trains, great picture opportunities everywhere. Fun kid areas and snack area. The employees and volunteers are friendly and seem happy to share what they know.

I have loved steam trains since I was a young child in the fifties. Living in the Pittsburgh out lying area - the steam trains were made up and turned around in a train yard near our farm house home. Some of my favorite memories was having our father hand my brother and I up to the engineers to ride the steam engine into the round house where it was turned around - - the fire of the engine, the gears - the puffing - the smell of the engine are something that I have never forgotten. Then - whenever we could as I grew up - we went on the steam trains or went to see them. It is a way of life that has disappeared. That is why I am THRILLED with this museum! It is big - there are so many engines - both steam and electric - all over the grounds. Some of them you can climb up into - to see their complex dials, switches - and the smell is so alive and there bringing one back in time if you allow yourself to travel there. There are great photo opportunities - it is great for adults - but it is an experience that children should have several times in their lives so that they get a real feel for history before and during the early time of the car - before internet - and modern jets. Across the street are steam trains you can ride on - - a short ride but totally worth it! Children of all ages will enjoy this important experience!
