Ridley Creek State Park

Story

Ridley Creek State Park is a 2606acre Pennsylvania state park in Edgmont, Middletown and Upper Providence Townships, Delaware County, Pennsylvania in the United States. The park, about 5mi north of the county seat of Media, offers many recreational activities, such as hiking, biking, fishing, and picnicking. Ridley Creek passes through the park. Highlights include a 5mi paved multi-use trail, a formal garden designed by the Olmsted Brothers, and Colonial Pennsylvania Plantation, which recreates daily life on a pre-Revolutionary farm. The park is adjacent to the John J. Tyler Arboretum. Ridley Creek State Park is just over from downtown, Philadelphia between Pennsylvania Route 352 and Pennsylvania Route 252 on Gradyville Road.HistoryThe bulk of the property was acquired in the late 1960s from the estate of well known horse breeder Walter M. Jeffords, Sr. and his wife Sarah, a niece of Samuel D. Riddle. The Jeffords had acquired the land starting about 1912 in small parcels, until they had over 2000acre, which was the largest private undeveloped property in the Philadelphia area by the 1960s. By 1918 they had built a large mansion, now the park office, around a stone colonial farmhouse. Twenty-four other historic properties were located on the grounds, many farmsteads that had retained family ownership since the seventeenth century. In 1976 these properties were registered on the National Register of Historic Places as a national historic district.

A great place to unwind. Relax and watch the water flow, enjoy the solitude of a hike on one of the trails, take the little ones to one of the small playground areas, cook up some grub at one of the many grills, or burn some calories (walking, running, or biking) on the paved multi-use trail. I've done all of that, and more. The mansion provides great backdrop for photos. It also has a Colonial Plantation. Great in all seasons, and close to the Philadelphia metro area, it makes a great afternoon get-away for you and your entire family.

We love Ridley Creek State Park. It has plenty of trails, a nice stocked creek for fishing, a nice paved path for walking, running and hiking. No camping, unless it's an "organized group". That's a shame. It would be nice to have a primitive camping spot like this close to Philadelphia. It's particularly beautiful in the fall when the leaves change. The colors make the mansion grounds look like something out of a story. Make sure to guard against ticks. Lyme's disease has been reported in the area.

I love Ridley State Park! There are multiple open areas to have picnic's and you can rent the pavilions, but beware, you have to do it a year in advance! It is a well kept place to roam with the family and friends and enjoy the beauty of out doors. They also have horse stables and piny rides for the kids!

Running, cycling, and walking 5 mile paved loop. Perfect and beautiful. There are multiple parking lots, trails that go through the woods. This is a great place to take children or families to enjoy nature. Remnants of historical houses are along the main path, with descriptions of the family's who lived there.

It's a good place for a walk. Colonial American reenactments. Former mainline estate of Walter Jeffords and his mansion is still there.
