Story

The Glass Onion is one of Charleston’s original home grown neighborhood-based, locally focused, all natural restaurants. Owner and Executive Chef Chris Stewart opened the restaurant in 2008 with fellow culinary colleagues. It was one of the first places in town to support local farmers and purveyors on almost every dish and drink on the menu. An eighth generation Alabama native, Stewart’s love and appreciation of southern food shows up throughout the menu which features comfort food and reflects his time growing up in Alabama, and his influences from experience in New Orleans and in the Lowcountry.

I would recommend this place to everyone visiting Charleston.  It's the type of place that you go with your family if you're a local.  It's not fancy by any means, but the food was good and the service was incredibly friendly.  We ordered a bunch of appetizers and a couple of entrees and they were all really tasty.  I recommend the fried green tomatoes.  They also have a decent beer menu.

The menu here changes regularly, although some things remain on the menu all the time.  The food is really good and the servers have always be very nice and attentive for the times we've gone there.  Parking can be tight in front of the store, but you can go past Swig & Swine and park behind there where there is plenty of parking.

Glass Onion is one of our favorites!

We got to the restaurant an hour before closing and it took almost a full hour to get our food. Three of the people in my party ordered burgers and two of them were so burnt that we could barely eat them. Our waitress was very pushy on selling us stuff so much so that she took it upon herself to add things to our bills. When she took our orders she asked us if we wanted the sauces for dipping and made it seem like it was part of the meal, when in reality there was a $2 charge per sauce. Another person in my party had a basket of toast added on that we had no idea did not come with her $26 meal until it was time to pay. Everyone in my party had something added to their bill. On a positive note the size of the burger was big for the price and the goat cheese was very good.

Went here for the first time tonight! Such a lovely atmosphere inside! I love the set up, especially the brown paper you can draw on with crayons and the candles in the center of the tables - it’s the little things! Great service; our waiter was quick, informative and friendly! He was very down to earth! I was overwhelmed because although they have a small menu, the choices are phenomenal and it was SO HARD to choose! My best friend and I started with the pimento cheese; let me tell you, IT WILL NOT DISAPPOINT (unless you just hate cheese; in that case, shame on you!)!!!!!! It was delicious! My friend ordered shrimp and grits and I had the Fried LA Crawfish “Monica”. DELICIOUS! Great portion sizes as well! I recommend this place.

Lovely little place with changing fare. It's not the cheapest place to eat but you get what you pay for. Service is great. I highly recommend it for a date night with your SO, a friend or your kid.
