Husk

About

Husk is a celebration of Southern ingredients and purveyors led by Chef Sean Brock.

Story

Located in Charleston and Nashville, Husk transforms the essence of Southern food. The kitchen reinterprets the bounty of its surroundings, exploring an agricultural-driven cuisine that begins in the rediscovery of heirloom products and redefines what it means to cook and eat in the South. At Husk, there are some rules about what can go on the plate – if it doesn't come from the South, it’s not coming through the door. The restaurant is as casual as it is chic, evoking a way of life centered on seasonality. It is a neighborhood gathering place for friends, and a destination dining spot for travelers, with a little bite of the South for everyone’s palates.

Coming to Greenville, SC in Summer 2017, and Savannah, GA in August 2017!

Fantastic restaurant. Great atmosphere. Wait staff was extremely professional. Almost everything was perfect from a food perspective. Only issue was that the cornbread and butter are extremely salty. Not sure if that's the norm or if it was a bad batch, but it was hard to ear without a swig of water. But not enough of an issue to lose a star!

Husk was highly recommended, especially the burger, so we had high expectations. The burger was underwhelming at best. It was quite small, and while delicious, was still pretty much an average burger riding on quite a price tag. The "husk" puppies were fried well, but the promise of pork inside was an empty promise - they were basically just bread. The server was inattentive and almost rude. All the tables around us were served a basket of bread, and while our table was set with bread plates and butter knives we never were brought any. Overall, it was not enjoyable, it was in fact disappointing, and in a city full of great places to eat, I doubt we will go back to Husk.

Went to the Bar only which is housed in a separate building. The atmosphere and buildings were the highlight. The food looked great that arrived at the bar. Burger, Oysters and Charcuterie plate. Bartenders were professional, but lacked any personality or sincerity. Upstairs is a nice quiet place to be or downstairs for the crowd.

I'm one of the droves of people who came to husk after falling in love with Sean Brocks passion for southern cooking & ingredients on Mind of a Chef - so there is a fair bit of bias coming into this review. Husk is set right in the heart of downtown Charleston in a charming, low-country home. We had a reservation and we were seated very quickly on the porch with sunlight filtering through a giant magnolia tree. The waitstaff is incredibly knowledgeable, funny and professional. They are very proud to serve at Husk and respect Sean Brock and Travis Grimes immensely. Any questions you have (and I had a lot) they can answer with funny anecdotes and interesting details. Bonus points for giving honest, personal recommendations that don't just happen to be the most expensive items on the menu. The food, obviously, was great. The bread and the honeyed butter they give out in the beginning of your meal is divine. I would recommend the Husk Puppies and the Shrimp and Grits. I also got the quail, which was gamey (which I like) but a little bone-y and thin. Though the waiter claimed that Husk was known for "generous portions," I would say that the portion sizes were average for a fine dining experience. We were definitely satisfied after our meal, but not super full.

Pleasant, delightful and helpful staff. Our party of four started with four appetizers followed by entrees. Drinks a toss up as were appetizers. Consensus both were a hit and miss. Three out of four entrees were good, but small portions and pricey. The fourth, a huge pork chop was a hit. Dessert nothing special. All in all great service, nice atmosphere, good food (not excellent) and a fun experience.
